Primary Function

It is expected that the Child Development and Family Center ( CDFC ) Child Development Supervisor (lead teacher) will be present at the Child Development and Family Center for the majority of each day to ensure that licensing and NAEYC Accreditation requirements are met and oversee daily operations in the classroom.
Job responsibilities will be performed in consultation and collaboration with the CDFC Director, CD Faculty/the CDFC Coordinators, and the Advisory Board. The Child Development Supervisor is responsible for initiating and facilitating duties and tasks described in this document.
The CDFC Child Development Supervisor (head teacher) will be evaluated by a member of the administrative team. In consultation by CD Faculty, Faculty Director, Families and peers.
Maintains frequent contact with CD Faculty/the CDFC Coordinators.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

As Lead teacher of a classroom of children at the CDFC :
1. Assures and maintains at all times the health and safety of all children in the classroom by maintaining a safe environment and implementing healthy practices (e.g., having all children wash their hands immediately before and after eating and washing after toileting, etc.)
2. Uses observations of children’s play to construct an emergent curriculum
3. Facilitates children’s play and uses scaffolding to promote children’s growth and development
4. Implements activities and maintains a classroom environment that supports and values diversity in the program
5. Uses a variety of documentation methods to show children’s progress and communicates to families learning occurring in the classroom
6. Arranges a safe classroom floor plan and provides materials and activities which promote independence and hands on exploration
7. Includes weekly cooking activities into curriculum
8. Maintains effective oral and written communication with families
9. Maintains current classroom portfolio
10. Assists in kitchen duties as needed
As supervisor of HDFS 490 Practicum students and/or student employees assigned to your classroom:
1. Plans and facilitates orientation activities related to the operations of the classroom.
2. Mentors undergraduate and graduate practicum students and graduate assistants who are serving as child care professionals
3. Models primary care giving roles, lead teaching by planning and implementing developmentally appropriate practices and appropriate guidance techniques
4. Assists in the evaluation of practicum students’ interactions with children, families, staff, and peers. Helps conduct written and oral performance and quarterly reviews of students
5. Provides assessment for 490 assignments as delegated by Instructor
6. Conducts weekly observations of practicum students
7. Communicates feedback respectfully to students and assists in establishing professional goals with practicum students
8. Provides feedback to Instructor regarding rubrics and assignments
As a staff member of the CDFC
1. Maintains classroom records
2. Attends weekly staff meetings and monthly board meetings. Contributes in dialogue and discussion and presents solutions to problems
3. Exhibits discretion in dealing with parents, children, and the academic progress of practicum students
4. Cooperates with students doing observations and faculty conducting research
5. Documents own performance and classroom supervision abilities to CDFC Director and CDFC
6. Participates in evening workshops and CDFC events with practicum students, student employees, and/or parents
7. Continues professional development through classes and conferences
8. Assists with NAEYC accreditation process and maintenance of DCFS license renewal
9. Supports collegial relationships by engaging in reflection with colleagues and works to resolve conflicts with colleagues in a direct and respectful way
10. Follows and uses NAEYC Code of Ethics as a guide to making decisions involving ethical dilemmas

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

1. Possession of credentials required by Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for employment as a Child Care Worker in a licensed child care facility. 2. (A) Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or related fields, including 18 semester hours of credit for course work directly related to child development and/or child care, 6 of them for the period from birth to age six
OR
(B) Two years of experience comparable to that gained at the lower level of this series and 18 additional semester hours of credit for college course work directly related to child development and/or child care
**Note: Courses that cover the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of young children and/or courses relating specifically to the group care and education of young children; e.g., curriculum, programming, pre-school teaching methods, discipline and child management, observation of children, working with parents, health, nutrition and safety, and supervised teaching experience for which credit is earned (such as student teaching, clinical experience, or practicum).

2. Possession of Illinois Gateway Infant-Toddler (level 3) credentials.

3. Current certification of infant/pediatric First Aid and CPR .

4. Demonstrated experience with teaching in a mixed age classroom setting, with children aged birth to five.

Education and Experience Preferred

A. Bachelor’s degree in child development, early childhood education or related field
B. Knowledge of and prior experiences with the National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation process
C. One year of teaching experience in a mixed age classroom setting
D. Experience with the Environmental Rating Scales
E. Gateways Infant-Toddler Credential Level 3

Physical Demands

Must be physically and emotionally able to work with young children and supervise their activities.

Physically- Able to lift 30 lbs, sit on the floor, stand, lifting objects and children at various ages and abilities. Move quickly to supervise and stay with active children.

Emotionally: Able to put a child’s needs above your own, able to support growth and development of emotional skills and a deep level of patience and maturity.
