We are seeking candidates who are nationally known as a scholar, educator, researcher and/or leader in the field of public health and who value diversity and inclusion.

This position is a full-time, tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. An earned doctorate in Public Health or a related discipline is required with significant research and/or practice experience in one of the core areas of public health (epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral science, health policy and management, and/or environmental health). Candidates whose degree is in a related discipline must demonstrate academic experience and credentials for designation as core public health faculty by accreditation standards.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Health and Exercise Science is comprised of nationally accredited and recognized programs including the Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, the Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health, the Master of Science degree in Athletic Training, and the Master of Science degree in Exercise Science. The mission of the Public Health program is to provide theoretical and applied knowledge that prepares students to promote and protect the health of the public. The undergraduate Public Health degree program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health ( CEPH ). The program is growing rapidly with plans to support a Master of Public Health degree in the near future. The program currently supports seven faculty (four tenure-track) with diverse research and practice backgrounds. It also enjoys numerous strong, long-term relationships with regional health providers and public health agencies.

The department is located within the Beaver College of Health Sciences ( BCHS ). The BCHS is the newest and second largest college at Appalachian State University, with almost 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students served by 150 faculty and staff. Committed to interprofessional innovation and collaboration in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach, the BCHS is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities we serve. In 2018, the College expanded to include the Holmes Convocation Center and Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a new, state-of-the-art 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate students, and potentially graduate students, in the candidate’s area of expertise, mentoring public health faculty and students, conducting research, seeking external funding, and collaborating with community stakeholders and other professional organizations to bring positive visibility to the public health program.

The Endowed Professor will also work closely with the Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services to support community-based research and program development in our rural communities.
