About the Opportunity:
The Division of Information Technology Services is currently seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Business Intelligence (BI) Database Developer. The BI Database Developer will be a dedicated member of the Business Intelligence and Analytics Team within the larger ITS organization. The role has two primary responsibilities. First is the continued expansion and administration of the university's Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). In this role, the BI Database Developer will work closely with members of the BI & Analytics team to define and implement new data marts and analytic structures to support reporting and analytic needs across the university. This includes the design of dimensionally modeled data marts, database views, and development of complex ETL/data integration software using technologies such as SSIS and stored procedures. Secondarily, the BI Database Developer will serve as the primary resource for ongoing maintenance and monitoring of the EDW. This includes administrative activities such as database object and SSIS migrations, performance tuning, incident resolution, and user management.

The ideal candidate has some experience working in hybrid-cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure. While we currently have deployed on on-premises EDW and analytics environment, it is the objective of the Business Intelligence and Analytics team to develop and implement a cloud strategy that enables scale across data platforms and BI/AI/ML applications.

To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the employee may be required to work outside his/her regular working hours and on some university holidays.

Responsibilities:
Enterprise Data Warehouse Architecture
  • Utilize technical expertise and industry best practices to advise and assist database administrators on how to administer, monitor, patch, upgrade and migrate, automate, backup and restore, plan for capacity, and provide other required activities for production and non-production data warehouse database systems.
  • Research and troubleshoot performance issues on production systems. Proactively recommend application changes to improve application performance.
  • Develop and maintain expert-level knowledge in MS SQL Server internals and best practices for design and physical data modeling of high-availability relational database systems.
  • Develop and maintain expert-level knowledge in SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, and SQL Server Reporting Services implementation and performance optimization.
  • Work closely with Business Intelligence & Analytics, QA, and database administration teams to migrate database objects throughout the entire software development lifecycle.
  • Design and implement functional test and load test packages, stored procedures, triggers and other database objects to support business intelligence applications as required.
  • Develop, enforce and maintain appropriate change control processes and procedures for all database objects.
  • Monitor MS SQL Server based BlackBoard Analytics platform to identify and resolve data quality issues.
  • Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation and provide technical escalation support as needed.


  • Data Warehouse Modeling and Design
  • Participate in the data warehouse design - conceptual, logical, and physical representations.
  • Collaborate with the business analysts and/or Business Intelligence & Analytics team to perform detailed data analysis and develop the data models that comprise the enterprise data warehouse.
  • Design dimensional data models for that follow industry best practice methodologies (e.g., Kimball, Inmon)
  • Create physical database objects including fact tables, dimensions, staging, materialized views, indexes in accordance with logical data model design and business requirements.
  • Participate throughout the entire project life cycle to facilitate conformance to design methodology, overall data warehouse architectural compliance and infrastructure coordination and preparation. Resolve subsequent issues and make modifications to ensure ongoing correlation between data models and physical data base structure.


  • Data Integration
  • Contribute to the design, development, and testing of extraction, transformation, and load (ETL) processes to accommodate changes in source systems and new business user requirements.
  • Administer and BlackBoard Analytics' Banner SSIS ETL packages
  • Work with Data Architects to modify and extend Blackboard Analytics ETL packages
  • Design, develop, tune, and deploy SQL Server stored procedures, triggers, and SSIS packages
  • Conduct performance analysis and optimize SSIS jobs, custom SQL and T-SQL jobs
  • Support Business Intelligence & Analytics team during functional, UAT, regression, and performance testing.


  • Cloud Data Platform Design and Development
  • Participate in the development of a hybrid cloud-based data platform strategy
  • Apply expertise with Microsoft Azure data platform/warehouse technologies (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Data Lake Storage, Synapse, etc.)
  • Lead migration of existing Microsoft SQL Server EDW environment to cloud
  • Advance and evolve cloud technical skills through training and hands on proof-of-concept development


  • Qualifications:
    • The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related and 5+ years' experience with data architecture, data lakes, and data warehousing
    • Advanced understanding of MS SQL Server, including stored procedures and SSIS integrations
    • Expertise with MS SQL Server / Administration
    • Working experience with data integration procedures to load data from transactional systems to a reporting database or data warehouse. Experience with SSIS is required, Informatica PowerCenter a plus.
    • Strong technical skills and the ability to learn and apply new technologies. Understanding of data visualization, AI, and Machine Learning technologies a plus.
    • Understanding of data warehouse best practices and methodologies, including Kimball, Inmon, etc.
    • Experience designing and implementing dimensional models, OLAP cubes, and other analytic database objects
    • Experience with one or more industry leading BI applications such as Cognos, BusinessObjects, or OBIEE required
    • Understanding of cloud-based data warehousing platforms, such as Azure, AWS, etc.
    • Operation or process-oriented approach to projects and tasks, completes tasks in a consistent, reliable, repeatable manner.
    • Experience effectively interacting with end-users, partners or customers required along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • A sense of urgency to address client requests effectively and quickly. Ability to work independently and be on-call when needed.
