Job Description:

The Department of Philosophy at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the role of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate needs to have a PhD in Philosophy prior to appointment and will have an area of specialization in Technology, Ethics, and Human Values and the ability to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses related to the intersection of technology and ethics, including PHIL 21, Ethics in the Digital Age, and PHIL 40, Science, Technology and Society. The successful candidate will have a primary research and teaching focus in philosophy as it engages the normative/ethical and social questions and problems pertaining to the development, sale, and use of technology. Expertise pertinent to the conceptual, ontological, and epistemological issues regarding the development, dissemination, sale, and use of technology is highly desirable. The candidate’s Area(s) of Competence (AOC) will include one or more of the following: Philosophy of Science, Feminist Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, Non-Western Philosophy, Social/Political Philosophy, and 20th Century Continental. Successful applicants will be able to teach a range of courses in the University’s Core Curriculum. The department is especially interested in candidates whose work in Technology and Ethics connects with Santa Clara University's social justice mission.

Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to both teaching and research and must be able to maintain an active research program. The official load for tenure-track faculty is seven courses over three academic quarters, with a standard one-course reduction for research-active faculty; thus, the normal teaching load is six courses per year: two 10-week courses per academic quarter, over three quarters. The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching load of five courses in the first year of appointment.

 Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Conduct assigned class meetings and exams while demonstrating a command of the discipline and pedagogical skill in presenting it effectively.

2. Post and maintain regular weekly office hours on campus.

3. Assign and submit student grades to the Registrar by the designated deadline.

4. Maintain an active research program commensurate to rank and contribute to the research life of the department in a collegial manner.

5. Develop courses and contribute to general curriculum development and assessment in a collegial manner.

6. Serve as an advisor to assigned students and provide informed advice.

7. Engage in service to the department, College, University, profession and the wider community, such as serving on committees, participating in professional organizations and activities, participating in and providing support for department and campus events, working with SCU’s Centers of Excellence (particularly the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics) and/or Residential Learning Communities, and performing community service in virtue of one’s professional expertise or university association.

 

 Qualifications:
