Job Description

The Hume Center for National Security and Technology at Virginia Tech is a university-level research center that reports to the Vice President of Research and Innovation. Its mission is to cultivate the next generation of national security leaders by developing and executing curricular, extracurricular, and research opportunities to engage students. As one of the fastest growing research centers at VT, sponsors and collaborators benefit from both highly-experienced student talent and senior technical leadership that address some of our nation’s greatest security challenges. The Hume team executes research on behalf of a range of national security research sponsors, including Government agencies and industry.

Motivated applicants are sought to join as researchers in the ranks of: Research Associate, Research Scientist, Senior Research Associate or Senior Research Scientist, within the Electronic Systems Lab to support rapid growth in our body of programs in secure communications, RF machine learning, signal processing, quantum information, and IoT security. Ideal candidates will be early career individuals with demonstrated skills with relevant analytical tools and aptitude for performing research in these areas. Rank will be dependent on experience.

The winning candidates can expect highly competitive salary and benefits in a university setting. This position is focused on individuals with expertise in digital communications, wireless systems, and RF machine learning.

Successful applicants will have experience with;
- Digital signal processing and software-defined radio technologies, with applications in military radar, tactical/public safety communications, electronic warfare and/or satellite communications.
- Experience with algorithm design, FPGA development, embedded DSP development, multi-threaded programming, GPU development, SDR hardware platforms, and Linux-based designed tools is desired.
- Specific experience using MATLAB, GNU Radio, HDL Coder, REDHAWK, X-MIDAS, VHDL/Verilog, C/C++, and python is desired.

Specific responsibilities for all ranks include the following;
- Support the execution of university sponsored programs by conducting research and development; author technical documents and publish peer-reviewed academic papers
- Support the development of new funded research programs by participating in proposal teams and supporting the business development activities of the Hume Center.
- Provide mentorship to students and junior researchers working on programs.

In addition those appointed to the rank of Senior Research Associate will have the responsibility for leading program development efforts.

Those appointed to the rank of Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist have additional responsibility to serve in a supervisory capacity for students and junior researchers and serve as principal investigator on research efforts.

Required Qualifications

Multiple positions available at varies levels and unless specified, all position require the following:

- Given the nature of the research conducted and requirement from the federal sponsor, candidates must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

- Evidence of high potential for excellence in research and development as demonstrated through academic study or experience.

- Experience with conducting research and development.

- Proficiency with the tools germane to field of research.

- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in executing upon research projects.

For the rank of Research Associate :

-An earned Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline; or an earned Bachelor's degree Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline and significant related experience.

For the rank of Senior Research Associate:

- An earned Doctorate degree in Aerospace Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline; or an earned Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline and significant related experience.

- Demonstrated excellence in research and development.

- Experience serving as a principal investigator in a research and development environment and demonstrated leadership in developing and executing research programs.

- Experience in providing research leadership to programs in these areas.

For the rank of Research Scientist:

  • An earned Doctorate degree in Aerospace Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline; or an earned Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline and significant related experience.


- Demonstrated excellence in research and development.

  • Experience serving as a principal investigator in a research and development environment and demonstrated leadership in developing and executing research programs.


For the rank of Senior Research Scientist:

  • An earned Doctorate degree in Aerospace Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline; or an earned Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline and significant related experience.


- Demonstrated excellence in research and development.

  • Experience serving as a principal investigator in a research and development environment and demonstrated leadership in developing and executing research programs.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the leadership of a portfolio of research and development programs.
  • Experience in providing research leadership to programs in these areas


Preferred Qualifications

- Active security clearance at the TS/SCI level.
- Experience working effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.
- Experience conducting research programs supporting the federal government.
- Experience in mentoring students and/or serving as a teaching assistant / instructor to college students
