General Summary:

As a participating member of the Power Plant team, the Stationary Engineer stands watch in the boiler/chiller plant, making rounds and taking readings. The incumbent makes decisions regarding boiler and chiller loads in order to satisfy campus heating/cooling requirements. Observes plant equipment during operation and makes recommendations regarding equipment condition and potential maintenance needs. Plays an important role in the operation of the plant and is expected to be a contributing member of the Power Plant team with regard to the overall function of the operation.

Essential Job Functions:

Start, stop and operate boilers, chillers, combustion turbine/generator and related equipment consistent with a central power plant environment Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of boilers, chillers, combustion turbine/generator and plant equipment on a regular basis Test boiler and cooling tower water condition and add chemical treatment to maintain proper limits and to prevent deposits or corrosion Check boiler safety and shut down equipment Disassemble, inspect, reassemble and clean equipment Understand and become proficient in the operation and use of all plant software packages Make rounds and keep equipment and plant logs Monitor and log fuel oil and gas consumption Take and log fuel oil tank levels during fuel oil burning operations Attend staff meetings, training seminars and in-service plant equipment training sessions as scheduled Performs assigned duties in a manner that fosters initiative, cooperation, problem solving and team building Makes recommendations to update, renew or institute current or new practices or policies within the plant Perform other functions and duties as assigned

Scope of Responsibility:

Knows the policies, procedures, and practices necessary to conduct normal function of a specific section, unit, or work area. Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on the working unit.

Decision Making:

Reports directly to Associate Director Utilities & Infrastructure, with minimal supervision.

Communication

Exchanges routine and non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring excellent oral and written communication skills. The incumbent must be computer literate and able to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical manuals.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess State of Maryland 1st Grade Stationary Engineer’s License
  • Experience:

  • Five years of experience working in a central power plant with high pressure boilers, large centrifugal chillers and auxiliary equipment
  • Basic computer skills desired
  • Must be willing to work overtime
  • Must be willing to work rotating shift work
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform physical work in a hot environment
  • Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
  • Communication skills using the spoken word
  • Ability to see within normal parameters
  • Ability to hear within normal range
  • Ability to move about
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 60 lbs. or less
  • Capable of climbing ladders to access roof mounted equipment

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
