The Radiology Division of Cancer Imaging Research is needs a technician who utilizes solid foundations in basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques associated with a specific area such as biochemistry, histology, immunology or molecular biology. Will provide minimal training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. May be assigned an independent project and might participate in the creation of manuscripts.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in planning experiments and evaluating test results utilizing knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Will interpret test results under guidance of Principle Investigator.
  • May interpret basic to moderately complex test results independently.
  • Selects, develops, performs and evaluates routine research methods; operates appropriate equipment.
  • Uses standard sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate.
  • Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
  • Monitors inventory levels proper storage of materials and orders supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements.
  • Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.

  • Knows the informal policies, procedures and practices necessary to conduct the normal function of a specific section, unit, or work area.
  • Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on the working unit.

Communication:

  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, physicsor related field required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques, coupled with a survey knowledge of biological sciences, chemistry, or physics.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality
  • Work environment may include areas of unpleasant extremes of cold or heat
  • Biohazardous conditions such as the risk of radiation exposure, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals may be present in this work environment which mandate attention to safety considerations
  • Near vision to see objects clearly within 20 inches
  • Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from eyes
  • Full spectrum vision to identify and distinguish color
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
  • Handling by seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hand or hands, but without finger dexterity
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less
  • Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30 lbs. or less
  • Ability to move about

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
