The Department of Anesthesiology is seeking aResearch Program Coordinatorfor clinical and simulation-based research and academic projects that are related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and work in the ICU. Organizes and implements data collection procedures and has active role in data collection. Current research projects include a multi-centered trial “CPR Coach Project”, a project related to developing a “Big Board” in the ICU, assessment of the “Bouncing CPR” technique, the “POCCA” trial and the Roger’s project.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to the Director of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center.
  • Participates in preparation and submission of research proposals to the institutional review board (IRB) locally, renewal of applications locally and tracking of other sites progress with their IRB applications for multicenter projects.
  • Coordinates adverse event reporting with clinicians and investigators to insure prompt reporting to JHMIRBs and study sponsors.
  • Assists with organizing simulation-based training boot camps and/or simulation training or research sessions, including ordering and or setting up equipment/supplies as needed.
  • Consents subjects to be enrolled in studies, after being trained to do so.
  • Conducts research related literature reviews.
  • Conducts interviews, in person or on telephone, after being given questionnaires and being trained to do so.
  • Conducts Focus Groups, in person or by ZOOM or other remote platform, after being given questions and format and being trained to do so.
  • Serve as a point of contact and coordinator for study investigators, team members, and participants regarding study details (status, scheduling, etc.)
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned protocols, maintains regulatory documentation for each assigned initiative on a shared drive for research group access.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Schedule and participate in study meetings, write and disseminate meeting minutes in a timely manner and maintain on a shared drive for research group access.
  • Provide updates on protocol implementation status, data accuracy and overall progress and provide recommendations on improvements to any operational issues discovered.
  • Maintain work-related training and certification as required by JHU.
  • Utilizes online tools for project management, schedules, training sessions, classes, workshops, and other activities.
  • Participate in technical training as necessary.
  • Communicate in a positive, professional manner with faculty instructors, students, and other users of the Simulation Center.
  • As necessary, provides information to faculty, staff, students and visitors concerning the functions of the simulation center.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires bachelor’s degree, preferably in a health-related field, and some related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Additional Requirements:

The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center strives to be a leader in teaching the importance of emergency readiness. In order to lead by example, we require this individual take the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (i.e., CPR) class and maintain certification by taking the class every 2 years (or the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) program) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)/ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support). This individual is not required to have these certifications at time of hire but will be expected to work towards certification once hired.

  • Good organizational skills required.
  • Some knowledge of hospital-based patient care (e.g. health care roles, clinical departments, and allied health services) helpful.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Good problem-solving skills to work with various faculty members and students from different program levels.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality, display diplomacy, be self-directed, and coordinate/run multiple tasks and projects concurrently with frequent interruptions.
  • Functions independently, moving projects along timeline with little oversight, providing brief updates to PI on a regular basis.
  • Receptive to feedback on performance in order to be able to continually grow in position and speaks up about what is needed, if anything, to be more successful in position.
  • Good computer skills and interest in gaining new skills required.
  • Strong customer service skills are essential, and applicants must enjoy working with people.
  • Positive attitude with desire to be part of a dynamic team.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move about the hospital or clinical environment.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
