The Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview is seeking a Sr. Critical Care Physician Assistant (PA) to work as a member of a collaborative multidisciplinary critical care team to provide comprehensive care to critically ill patients in surgical and burn ICU settings. The PA will work independently with supervision of an attending intensive care physicians who are members of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine and Department of Surgery. The PA will work collaboratively with attending physicians, residents, ICU staff nurses, unit pharmacist, dietician, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, and consulting services. The PA will provide care to patients in various intensive care units including Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works independently with supervision and medical direction of Critical Care Attending physicians in the assessment and treatment of critically ill patients in the ICU settings listed above.
  • Obtains history and perform physical examinations on patients newly admitted to ICU.
  • Coordinates comprehensive patient care plan in collaboration with surgical and other consulting services.
  • Participates in daily rounds to discuss progress of patient clinical course and to develop patient care plans.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic studies.
  • Performs bedside procedures such as arterial catherization, central venous catheterization and non-tunneled dialysis catheter placement, if credentialed to do so.
  • Initiates or modifies routine, complex, and emergent medication regimens and therapies.
  • Serves as an educational and clinical resource to nursing and multi-disciplinary staff as well as to patients and their families.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and teaching to the junior NP/PA staff, PA and medical students, as well as residents rotating in the units.
  • Assists NP/PA manager with formulation of PA policies within the ACCM department and other administrative matters.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree, certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; completion of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program are required.
  • Must be licensed as a PA in the state of Maryland.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in acute/critical care setting, and obtained proficiency in area of critical care. Five years of experience is preferred.
  • Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Current CPR and ACLS certifications.
  • Must maintain license to practice and certifications during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH and BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must have advanced clinical skills and have demonstrated the ability to apply theoretical concepts as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team providing care to patients and their families.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose patients and to implement a medical care plan for the long and short-term care of acute and chronic health conditions in the intensive care unit.
  • Apply critical-thinking and problem solving skills to function effectively and adapt to a dynamic and often changing work environment.
  • Apply evidence-based decision-making when assessing and treating patients.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with members of interdisciplinary health team to enhance collaboration and problem solving.
  • Excellent organizational skills required to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Advanced communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary to adequately provide information to patients and fellow health care personnel.
  • Function with minimal supervision within the scope of their practice as part of the critical care team.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Working Conditions:

    Applicants must be willing to work a rotating schedule, including weekends and holidays, as required to meet patient care needs.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
