California Baptist University ( CBU ) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Research. This role will also hold the title of ‘Fletcher Jones Endowed Professor of Research.’

Position Description: The Dean of Research holds academic rank as the Fletcher Jones Endowed Professor of Research and is charged with the administration, academic leadership, and supervision of research initiatives. The Dean of Research will work closely and collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, and staff, oversee the Office of Research Initiatives and represent the University with internal and external constituencies. The Dean of Research will provide leadership, management, and oversight of the research, resources (human, financial, and space), and innovated operations of the University. This administrator will drive strategic planning and therefore must be a visionary who has the ability and energy to realize a vision.

Specific Duties include, but not limited to:
 Develop and enact strategies and programs to enhance the research environment and opportunities in the University for faculty, staff, and students;
 Expand institution-wide external funding activities through improved research proposals and new collaborative grants with established research institutions;
 Shape the institutional research environment to improve attractiveness for new faculty with established research portfolios and support any associated grant transfers;
 Direct and oversee the Office of Research Initiatives to develop, revise and implement university-wide sponsored programs policies and procedures;
 Serve as a resource and facilitator for faculty and staff who are considering writing grants, have operational questions concerning funded grants, or who are encountering problems or difficulties with grant related activities.

Strong candidates for this position are expected to have:
 Experience overseeing compliance with federal, state and local sponsor policies and guidelines;
 Experience evaluating research proposals;
 Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills;
 Capability to develop and implement strategies to address long-term opportunities;
 The capacity to be a diplomatic advocate for the University, its faculty and academic programs.

The Dean reports directly to the Associate Provost for Administration and serves on the Provost’s Council.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include: 1) A demonstrated mature Christian faith aligned with CBU’s foundation as a Christian institution committed to the Great Commission: 2) An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution: 3) Progressive administrative experience in higher education; 4) Experience managing large research programs such as centers, departments, and large and complex research grants; 5) Administrative experience related to personnel matters; 6) An outstanding record of leadership and service to the community; and 7) An outstanding record of academic activities including university teaching, research, external federal funding, and service.
