The Pathogen and Microbiome Institute (PMI), formerly The Center for Microbial Genetics & Genomics, is a mission-driven Joint Research Institute that combines the academic genomic research focus of NAU and the translational genomics capacity of TGen, and will capitalize upon inter-institutional synergies and collaborative efforts. We are expanding our faculty base with additional NAU and TGen funding. Major space changes are occurring in the Applied Research and Development Building with the commissioning of additional wet lab space and expansion into office and computational suites.
PMI is internationally known for its work and has ongoing collaborations with various government agencies and institutions. Funding for the Institute is acquired from federal, state and local funding agencies.
Being located at an academic institution PMI is committed to undergraduate research training and further development of the workforce in these important areas of research. There are over 100 faculty, full time staff, graduate and undergraduate students currently working in the Institute with additional researchers closely associated with PMI on the NAU campus.
This is a full-time, 12-month, benefit eligible position. This person will generally be responsible for significant support for research programs at PMI. This includes significant budget and other support for grant proposal development and submission for PMI proposals, support for generating and submitting periodic reports to agencies.and creating and maintaining a resource list of upcoming calls for proposals in PMI’s areas of expertise.
Grant proposal development and submission
Coordinate and support the development and writing of grant proposals, including large, interdisciplinary proposals involving faculty in different departments, colleges, and units at the university as well as partners outside the university and international collaborators and resources.
Work with PMI faculty and staff to develop grant proposal budgets and ensure that project budgets are in line with project needs and are within the guidelines of the funding agency and NAU.
Thoroughly research sponsor guidelines for each proposal submission. Assist with identifying and gathering other needed documents (e.g., letters of support, biosketches, sub recipient documents), and assist in formatting proposals to meet agency requirements and guidelines.
Act as liaison with Pre-Award Sponsored Projects team to ensure all documents are completed and submitted on time.
Process and submit all forms needed in the Cayuse system (or other system as dictated by funding agency).
Contact and communicate with subrecipients when needed. Assist with developing subcontract budget and other required documents when needed.
Work with PMI faculty and staff to identify specific areas of grant writing interest and identify specific funding possibilities for PMI interest areas.
Develop and maintain a resource listing of upcoming calls for proposals in PMI’s areas of expertise; provide information on upcoming opportunities on at least a monthly basis.
Research project budget monitoring and reporting
Develop financial projections and spending plans for projects, researching assumptions for project spending.
Identify and craft resolutions for financial and programmatic issues and present them to the finance and business operations core associate director to create a plan for improvement.
Write research reports as required by the terms and conditions of grants and contracts.
Work with faculty who are awarded inter/intramural grants to ensure pursuit of additional sources of funding. Work with PIs to ensure funds are correctly expended under NAU’s internal grant program; work with the JFR from the VP Research Office on expenditures and awards from that office.
Support PMI PIs with annual, final, or other reporting on research projects as required by the projects; assist PIs with gathering the required information in the specified format, and with interfacing with the necessary systems. Work with NAU’s PostAward project team as needed.
Network with local, national and international agencies for future program development.
Work with the PIs, sponsors, and the subrecipients to create the required documents for subaward documents, modifications, and incremental funding. As part of this function, create the necessary budgets for incremental funding on awards, and submit documents to the Sponsored Projects Post Award office for submission to the subrecipients for signature,and then subsequent entry into the NAU Financial system after the required couments are signed.
Bachelor’s degree in business or related field AND two years of
related, responsible grant proposal development, budgeting or
accounting experience, and program coordination experience;
10 years of progressively responsible grant proposal development, budgeting or accounting experience, and program coordination experience; OR,
Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.
