Job Description:

The University of Saint Joseph invites applications for the Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Physician Assistant Studies. The Dean reports to the Provost and serves as a member of the academic affairs leadership team. This individual serves as the chief executive and academic officer of the School and is responsible for its academic programs, policies, budgeting, personnel, and planning. Additionally, the Dean provides leadership for the faculty, as well as internal and external constituents. The School includes the departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy Practice and Administration, and Physician Assistant Studies, and houses the Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies programs. Collectively over 45 faculty and staff and over 300 students comprise the School. The Pharmacy program is located at USJ's Hartford campus and the PA program is located on the main campus in West Hartford, CT. Both programs are delivered in a modular, mastery-based format with a 12-month calendar.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

  • Provides collaborative and visionary leadership for the operation and continuous improvement of the School
  • Oversees implementation and maintenance of program best practices and assumes responsibility for obtaining and maintaining both regional and specialized accreditation as well as complying with state regulations for existing and new programs within the School
  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for budget and personnel
  • Supervises department chairs as well as administrative and professional staff
  • Communicates the vision and goals of the School to the community and to professional constituencies
  • Collaborates with the office of Institutional Advancement to seek funding to support and expand the activities of the School
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of the multiple dimensions of diversity within the school and university communities
  • Fosters recruitment and retention of qualified students and provides leadership to students in academic endeavors and co-curricular activities
  • Collaborates with department chairs and the University Registrar to develop and approve course offerings to ensure that student needs are met
  • Serves on a variety of University Committees, including the Provost Council and Extended Cabinet


Requirements:

  • Earned doctorate in pharmacy or a related discipline
  • Record of distinguished teaching and research/scholarship
  • Prior academic administrative experience
  • Administrative experience in fields beyond pharmacy a plus
  • Experience in securing external funding
  • Credentials which merit appointment at the rank of Professor
  • Collaborative and innovative leader with a commitment to academic excellence
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
  • Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment.  
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population
  • Commitment to the mission of the University of Saint Joseph
  • Physical ability to perform essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
