Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, the Director, NAU Career Development for the division of Student Affairs provides leadership for programs and services that connect students early and often to career through 1-1 support, workshops and programming, and networking events. Students served include those on the main Flagstaff campus, as well as statewide sites and online learners.

Essential Functions

Leadership, Vision, Strategy, and Assessment (20%)

Lead NAU Career Development operations, staff, and budget, for a program serving NAU students of all academic years and majors. Oversee Employment and Internships, Career Programming, and Student Employment areas within Career Development.
Establish mission, vision, and strategic goals for NAU Career Development, aligned with NAU and Student Affairs mission and goals; align resources and priorities to ensure goals are met, and hold self and team accountable for mission and goal achievement.
Develop and articulate a NAU-wide career development philosophy that meets the needs of NAU's student population and effectively prepares them for the realities of the 21st century workforce; oversee the development of programs grounded in this philosophy.
Establish annual assessment plan, assess programs throughout the year both quantitatively and qualitatively, report on results, and recommend changes to programs based on data collected.
Demonstrate a commitment to Diversity and NAU's Affirmative Action Plan.

Team Management and Development (20%)

Supervise, either directly or indirectly, all Career Development professional staff, classified staff, graduate assistants, graduate interns, and undergraduate student workers/peer mentors. Set performance goals, provide coaching and feedback, and assess performance through annual appraisals.
Assign staff to projects based on their strengths, interests, skills sets, and professional/personal growth needs. Balance workload and assignments and identify professional development opportunities for skill building.
Set objectives for projects and assignments, provide coaching, guidance, and feedback through project/assignment lifecycle, and review and approve work products.
Build, maintain, and refine team infrastructure including business processes, plans, and roles/responsibilities.
Develop and implement creative ways to increase team capacity through the use of human and technological resources at NAU and beyond.

Campus-Wide Leadership and Partnerships (15%)

Chair the NAU Career Task Force, consisting of NAU and Coconino Community College (CCC) career development professionals or those who roles closely intersect with career development.
Coordinate with career development offices in the W.A. Franke College of Business and the College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences, other Student Affairs departments, faculty, the academic advising community, and other entities (e.g., Cline Library, Athletics), identifying where intersections with career development exist and synergizing programming.
Establish and ensure that a consistent message and philosophy regarding career is presented university­ wide to students, faculty, and staff, as well as to external stakeholders including employers, experiential learning providers, parents and families, and the local community.
Oversee the design, develop, implementation, and assessment of career education programming that is implemented campus-wide.
Serve as subject matter expert on career development, providing guidance to staff and faculty campus-wide.

Financial Management and Compliance (10%)

Manage fiscal operations for the team, ensuring the effective and responsible use of financial resources.
Establish and monitor annual budget; ensure that the team understands the budget and operates within established parameters. Hold purchase card and reconcile transactions monthly.
Ensure that all team members comply with federal, state, and university policies, procedures, and regulations.

Marketing and Development (10%)

Build and implement a brand presence for NAU Career Development, educating the university, employers, and other stakeholders about the team and its mission, philosophy, programming, and successes.
Oversee multi-media marketing campaigns, working with NAU entities to promote Career Development, its services, and its benefits electronically, in print, and via radio and television.
Promote sponsorship opportunities for the Career and Graduate School Expo, recruitment database, etc. with employers.
Participate in development efforts to encourage prospective donors to fund Career Development initiatives in partnership with University Advancement and Student Affairs Leadership.

Employer Relationship Management (10%)

Promote NAU and its students to employers of all sizes in Flagstaff, the state of Arizona, and beyond. Increase employer presence on campus through leveraging relationships with alumni, parents and families, and others.
Oversee NAU's enterprise-wide job search database, to include promoting its features and benefits, liaising with the vendor, continuously approving functionality/usability, and identifying ways to use the system to automate/improve business processes.
Oversee, or organize and implement, recruiting events to include career fairs, part time job fairs, information sessions, and others.
Proactively develop relationships with employers seeking to hire students of multiple majors, employers opening new offices in the State of Arizona, and other potential "high value" employers.

Student Affairs Leadership (10%)

Serve as a strategic member on the Student Affairs Leadership Teams.
Represent Career Development at NAU, in the local community, regionally, and beyond at conferences and other professional development events.
Responsible for providing strategic reports and recommendations to NAU administration related to Career Development, Internships, and Student Employment.

Career Advising and Education {5%)

Advise individual students on resume/cover letter development, interview skills, and job search strategies.
Provide expertise to students on a variety of career exploration tools and related resources, such as O*Net, MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, StrengthsQuest, or others.
Conduct workshops of varying sizes (up to 100 students) on a variety of topics including resumes/cover letters, interview skills, and job search strategies.
Maintain current knowledge of career development, employment and recruiting trends, college student development, internships, experiential learning, and other related topics as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in higher education administration/student affairs, educational leadership, organizational leadership, or closely related field.
Six years full-time experience working in higher education, career education and/or workforce development.
OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Leadership and administrative experience, including strategic planning, fiscal management, and staff supervision.
Experience developing, managing, and assessing student success programs in higher education.
Experience in an additional industry outside of higher education.
Experience in human resources or recruiting.
Experience interpreting federal and state labor laws, to include those governing internships.
Experience managing benefit eligible staff, graduate assistants, and student employees.
Experience with curriculum development, including online learning.
Experience developing strong working relationships and collaborating with campus community, employers, and stakeholders.
Experience with and commitment to working with diverse populations.
