Position Summary:

The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center is seeking candidates to support technical development of a flagship next-generation experiment in neutrino astrophysics, IceCube-Gen2. The position may also involve effort for select tasks of software and firmware development for the IceCube Upgrade, currently in design and construction. The Upgrade is also seen as a step towards the full Gen 2. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in physics instrumentation design, with experience in embedded systems, data acquisition software and/or firmware, and communications strategies for distributed sensor arrays.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

M.S. in physics, electrical/computer engineering, computer science, or related field, or BS with equivalent experience.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
-A minimum of 1 year experience with data acquisition instrumentation (software, firmware, and/or hardware)
-A minimum of 1 year experience with low-level embedded system design
-An ability to work independently and creatively in an international scientific collaboration

Preferred:
-Experience with distributed instrumentation / sensor networks, in particular for physics experimentation
-Experience with digital electronics design for data acquisition systems, with a focus on high reliability and/or redundancy
-Experience with hardware description languages such as Verilog or VHDL
-Experience with standard and/or custom communication protocols, data compression algorithms, etc.

Additional Information:

The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) is a research center in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a research institution with an international reputation in physical sciences research and education. WIPAC is responsible for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a kilometer-scale neutrino detector at the South Pole. The detector consists of more than 5000 optical sensors deployed over one kilometer deep in Antarctic ice. An international collaboration of scientists and engineers from over thirty research institutions participate in a program to study high-energy neutrinos from cosmic sources. UW-Madison is responsible to the National Science Foundation and the IceCube Collaboration for the maintenance and operation of the observatory; details can be found at http://icecube.wisc.edu.
