The Department of Health and Human Values/Public Health at Davidson College invites applications for an assistant professor of public health beginning in July 2021. This is a tenure track position. While the field of specialization is open, we are particularly interested in candidates with a focus on and teaching experience related to topics such as social epidemiology, health disparities, social determinants of health, non-communicable diseases, and environmental health.

Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and interdisciplinary public health research, practice, and/or policy. As an assistant professor position, future potential in relation to teaching and public health research, practice, and/or policy is important, so candidates should describe this position in relation to their planned career trajectory. Examples of this commitment to teaching include (but are not restricted to) description of teaching philosophy, courses designed or taught, involvement in training activities, thesis or independent study supervision, or institutional and peer recognition/acknowledgment of teaching excellence. Evidence of interdisciplinary public health research, practice, and/or policy might include evidence and description of completed or planned research, practice, or policy projects and activities, peer-reviewed publications and presentations, or contributions to the government or organizational reports.

We are seeking candidates with the ability and interest to contribute to Davidson’s requirement to Justice, Equality, and Community (JEC) particularly in relation to “…manifestations of injustice or structural inequalities that have impinged on the…well-being of persons and groups who have been subordinated, marginalized, or put in positions of precarity by others.” The candidate should also have the potential to contribute to programs such as Africana Studies, Anthropology, Biology, Communication Studies, Data Science, East Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Latin American Studies, Sociology, or South Asian Studies. The candidate should include materials that describe how their teaching and work could address the goals and outcomes of the JEC as well as their potential to contribute to other programs at Davidson College.

Practitioners and researchers from outside academia with relevant qualifications, including a strong interest in and experience with teaching, are strongly encouraged to apply. We encourage applications from candidates with a demonstrated strong background in epidemiological theory and quantitative and other relevant methods and a commitment to and preparation in interdisciplinary public health including social sciences, humanities, and other fields. Candidates must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree by July 2021.

The successful candidate will teach five courses each academic year (four in the first year), including Introduction to Public Health, Introduction to Epidemiology, Research Methods in Public Health, and upper-level courses that reflect the candidate’s scholarly interests. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active research program capable of attracting external funding and producing peer-reviewed publications with undergraduate co-authors. The candidate also will be expected to mentor independent studies and senior thesis projects in public health.

Apply online only at https://employment.davidson.edu. To ensure a full review of application materials, applications should be completed by 11:59 PM EDT on October 12, 2020.
