THE POSITION

Texas Wesleyan University is launching a national search for a provost. Texas Wesleyan seeks a successful teacher, scholar, and experienced academic leader committed to academic excellence. The candidates experience should demonstrate distinction in interdisciplinary, liberal arts education at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.

 

The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs reports to the President and leads, directs and evaluates the University academic programs and activities.

 

The Office of the Provost advises the President, senior administrators, and board members on academic matters and oversees the following areas:

 

Directs and coordinates activities of the deans and academic directors, key faculty governance groups on all curricular, academic personnel and budget matters.

 

Oversees planning, curriculum, faculty, libraries, and academic life

Serves as liaison with accrediting agencies which evaluate academic programs.

 

The Office of the Provost oversees the following areas as well:

  • Registrar
  • Academic Support Services
  • Institutional Research
  • The Graduate School of Health Professions
  • The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The Provost plays a pivotal role in the strategic plan in the following areas:

  • Sustaining high quality and vibrant academic pre-professional liberal arts undergraduate and graduate professional programs, employing student-centered best-practice teaching methods.
  • Leadership in the provision of moral, ethical, and academic support to develop successful community and professional leaders.
  • Partner in financial management to support academic excellence and affordability for students.
  • Facilitate community engagement, experiential learning, and community aware academic programming.

Texas Wesleyan University was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1890. It was named the Women’s College for Southern Methodism until 1914, when it became the Texas Women’s

In 2017, Texas Wesleyan brought back its football program after a 75-year hiatus. Since then, the

University has also added wrestling and dance teams. It has expanded academic offerings, including a B.B.A. in computer information sciences and a

Doctor of Nursing Practice – Family Nurse Practitioner, among others. It has also transitioned its MBA program to a 100% online format, and shortened its length to as little as one year.

THE LEADERSHIP AGENDA

Serving as the university’s chief academic officer, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs acts as a strategic and practical advisor the President, executive staff and the Board of Trustees in the development and execution of the university’s overall leadership, vision and management of the school’s academic programs. He/she also provides leadership for all aspects of the university's efforts to engage the public and the university campus through leading faculty governance, academic program development and management, compliance with State and Federal regulatory mandates, and implementing the strategic plan.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs and coordinates activities of deans and academic directors, and key faculty governance
  • groups on all curricular, academic personnel, and budget matters.
  • Oversees University planning, curriculum, faculty, libraries, and academic life.
  • Determines scheduling of courses and recommends implementation of additional courses.
  • Coordinates activities of student advisors.
  • Ensures the quality and effectiveness of all academic-related programs.
  • Participates in activities of faculty committees.
  • Advises the President, senior administrators, and Board members on academic matters.
  • Directs all areas of the academic budget development and effectively monitors program costs.
  • Carries out staff program and performance evaluations, establishes relevant policies and
  • procedures, and other administrative duties.
  • Serves as the chief liaison officer with accrediting agencies, which evaluate academic programs.
  • Serves as chief administrative officer in absence of President.
  • Attends weekly meetings with the President to determine strategy and evaluate progress toward
  • University academic goals.
  • Leads regularly scheduled staff meetings to review progress toward academic goals and to
  • develop new programs and strategies.
  • Ensures weekly staff reports are prepared to inform division-wide progress to the President,
  • Senior Staff, and the Board of Trustees.
  • Ensures completion of annual staff evaluations with each staff member in the division.

    Education and/or Experience

    The strongest candidate will evidence a strong record as teacher and scholar, combined with a

    successful record of increasing academic leadership and administrative experience. A terminal

    degree in a discipline offered at Texas Wesleyan is preferred.

     

    A proven track record of creative and visionary leadership in the development of academic

    planning in coordination with multiple stakeholders is essential. Demonstrated adeptness and

    creativity with emerging technology for academic programs and a strong eagerness to learn, and

    guide colleagues In new methods of academic delivery is essential in the current academic

    climate.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Demonstrated ability to be an inspiring, collaborative leader who can interact

    productively and effectively with internal constituents (employees, students, executive

    leaders and Board members) and external constituents.

    Ability to think strategically, build consensus, and engage multiple constituencies of the

    Familiarity with academic policies and procedures of private universities.

    Familiarity with higher education budgeting and scheduling processes.
