Description:

The Department of Social, Cultural and Justice Studies (SCJS) at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Department Head at the rank of associate or full professor. This is a tenure-track, 12-month position with appointment to begin July 1, 2021. The field of specialization is open, but candidates must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Criminal Justice/Criminology, Geography, or Sociology. The successful candidate must show evidence of administrative skill and experience and have the ability to foster and maintain collaborative relationships across disciplines within SCJS, with other programs and departments throughout the University, with the administration, and with external entities. Applicants should have a strong record of excellence in teaching and evidence of scholarly productivity. In addition, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education. In particular, we are interested in candidates who have contributed to, or have plans to contribute to, programs that aim to increase the participation of underrepresented students and/or faculty in the social sciences.

The SCJS Department offers a B.A. in Anthropology, and B.S. degrees in Anthropology, Criminal Justice, and Sociology, as well as an M.S in Criminal Justice, and a minor in Geography. With over 500 undergraduate and graduate majors, and 25 faculty actively engaged in teaching and research, the Department also contributes substantially to the University's general education program. Department faculty have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations across the university and the surrounding community. In addition to carrying out administrative duties for the Department, the responsibilities for this position include teaching two courses per year. A 12-month contract will be offered at a salary commensurate with background and experience.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology, Criminal Justice/Criminology, Geography or Sociology;

  • Record of research, teaching, and service sufficient to be tenured in the Department of SCJS at the associate or full professor rank;

  • Demonstrated commitment to attracting and supporting a diverse faculty, staff, and student body;

  • Outstanding leadership, collaboration and consensus-building skills in multi-disciplinary context;

  • Active and on-going research agenda with a record of quality, peer-reviewed publications;

  • Ability to teach introductory/advanced courses in their discipline.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of full-time administrative experience;

  • A strong commitment to advocating for faculty and staff;

  • Evidence of mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty;

  • Experience in assessment and curriculum development;

  • A record of successful application, management, and execution of external grants;

  • The motivation and dedication needed to develop and maintain positive relationships with donors, alumni, and the professional community;

  • Support of and willingness to engage in a variety of instructional modalities, especially online instruction;

  • Willingness to engage in assisting the UTC campus in its ability to reach additional goals as specified in UTC's Strategic Plan, including a demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion.
