Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Academic Counselor for the Advantage/TRiO Student Support Services Program provides academic advising, including counseling to students with personal, career, and academic difficulties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Conduct proactive (intrusive) counseling services to program participants, assisting with course selection, registration, financial aid, academic counseling, transfer and career planning, and personal issues.
2. Create an academic/graduation plan with each assigned advisee/participant.
3. Regularly monitor and act upon the academic progress of participants.
4. Assess students' needs and assist students in obtaining developmental tutoring assistance.
5. Maintain and update student confidential records.
6. Assist in planning and implementing all program events.
7. Counsel and educate students on financial and economic literacy, including financial planning for postsecondary education.
8. Communicate and liaise with other departments, staff and faculty.
9. Administer and interpret career assessment tests.
10. Coordinate career exploration activities.
11. Participate in the identification and selection of students for the Student Support Services Program.
12. Write articles for program newsletter.
13. Make referrals and maintain liaisons with appropriate college staff, and public and private social services and health agencies.
14. Supervise and provide training for the Advantage Peer Mentors program.
15. Assist in developing and conducting follow-up studies to track student retention, transfers, career choices, and prepare data for annual report.
16. Participate in the planning and implementation of all matters pertaining to meeting program objectives.
17. Assist in preparation of Annual Performance Report to the U.S. Department of Education.
18. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's degree in developmental education, education, counseling, student services, or a related field.
2. One year of experience providing personal, transfer, academic, or career advising, or equivalent.
3. Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Extensive counseling background, preferably with low-income adults and marginalized communities.
2. Experience advising community college students; prior work experience with TRIO/SSS programs desirable.
3. Experience in the administration and interpretation of assessment and diagnostic instruments such as FOCUS, MBTI, and O*NET Interest Profiler.
4. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and conduct workshops on academic and life skills.

Additional Information:

COMPENSATION : 19 hours per week, $30.03 per hour; appointment through August 31, 2021 (extended annually pending funding). Grant funded, Benefited. MCCC Unit Professional Position.
