Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Director of Mercy Center for Spiritual Life provides pastoral and strategic leadership to the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, cultivating and fostering the spiritual and religious life of the Salve Regina University community. The Director supervises the campus ministry staff, university chaplains, and student leadership team of the Mercy Center, promoting Salve Regina University's mission and values through liturgies, retreats, service opportunities, student leadership initiatives, and campus and community programming and collaborations. This is an 11-month, full-time position, reporting to the Vice President for Mission Integration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

  • Promote the mission and values of Salve Regina University: welcoming persons of all beliefs, seeking wisdom, promoting universal justice, demonstrating an appreciation for the work of Mercy, Catholic higher education and a commitment to serve those of diverse religious and spiritual traditions.
  • Develop and advance the strategic plan of the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, in alignment with the 2020 Strategic Compass of Salve Regina University.
  • Foster the spiritual and religious life of all members of the University community, particularly students.
  • Celebrate, inspire, and engage the Catholic tradition and Mercy heritage of Salve Regina University through the development of the Catholic liturgical life of the community in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel and the development of offerings for students, faculty, staff, and alumni seeking to grow in their faith.
  • Establish a multifaith prayer space on campus and develop collaborations with local faith communities to foster opportunities for ecumenical and multifaith dialogue, reflection, and prayer for students, faculty, and staff and alumni of all religious and spiritual traditions.
  • Advance university engagement with Catholic Social Teaching and the works of mercy and justice, particularly in relation to the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy: anti-racism, immigration, women, earth, and non-violence.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Community Engagement and Service to develop regular domestic and international immersions that advance the values of simplicity, solidarity, spirituality, and service.
  • Provide creative, pastoral, and visionary leadership in the planning, administration, supervision, and evaluation of Mercy Center liturgies, retreats, service opportunities, student leadership initiatives, and campus and community programming and collaborations.
  • Integrate Mercy values in the university community by developing cross-campus relationships and serving as a resource for the various constituencies of the university.
  • Supervise a staff of six professional staff (two campus ministers, two university chaplains, one Catholic wedding coordinator, one administrative assistant), as well as student leaders, work-study employees, and interns.
  • Conduct regular assessments of Mercy Center programing and initiatives to gauge impact and inform future planning; develop regular reports to share the work of the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life with internal and external constituencies.
  • Serve as a public voice for advancing the mission of Salve Regina University, offering presentations for campus and community constituents related to the Mercy, Catholic tradition and the work of the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life.
  • Plan and manage the annual budget for the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life.
  • Partner with the advancement team to secure support and funding of new and sustaining programs and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the Salve Regina University's Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) and the Conference for Mercy Higher Education (CMHE) Campus Ministry Council.
  • Collaborate with the Conference for Mercy Higher Education to provide students with the opportunity to develop as Mercy leaders through the Pilgrimage for Young Mercy Leaders, UN Mercy Global Action Program, and the D.C. Mercy Advocacy Program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Mission Integration.

Valid driver's license required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The position does not substantially expose an individual to adverse environmental conditions.

This position could, on occasion, require bending, reaching, ascending and descending stairs, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, and hearing.


Requirements:

Master's degree in the area of Pastoral Ministry, Religious Education, or Theology required. At least three years of experience in Campus Ministry at the college level required. Must be a practicing Catholic with an appreciation for the charism of the Sisters of Mercy and competence in accompanying persons of diverse religious traditions or no religious tradition in their search for meaning, purpose, and spirit. Must possess the skills needed to take a collaborative approach to ministry, public relations skills for effective oral and written communication, and the ability to initiate and implement creative and strategic programming and planning. Also required is a demonstrated ability to effectively lead, inspire, and mange a team, work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff and students, an ability to interpret institutional policies, plans, and regulations, and an ability to interpret and follow the guidelines and regulations of the Roman Catholic Church when designing, scheduling, and implementing programs, liturgies, and special events.

Must be available on nights, and weekends, as required. This position requires twenty-four-hour callback in cases of emergency.
