Responsibilities

We have an immediate need for Non-Sworn Public Safety Officers

The Campus Public Safety Officer is a full-time, hourly, non-sworn position. The purpose of the Office of Public Safety at Saint Mary's College is to secure the safety and wellbeing of students and employees of, and visitors to, our campus, and to safeguard the College property. This is achieved through heavy foot patrol, vehicle patrol, parking enforcement, fire and crime prevention, partnership with local police departments, and from being an active presence and support to all persons on campus.
Essential Functions: Customer Service: As the first point of contact to visitors of the college, Public Safety personnel work the Guard Shack at the entrance of the school; give directions, answer questions, and provide parking passes to visitors. Provide campus escorts and vehicle jump start services as needed.
Patrol: Conduct security patrols of the 400 plus acres of the college including off-campus locations. Conduct routine security checks of the college's 68+ buildings and structures on foot or by vehicle.
Dispatch: Receive emergency calls from the public; dispatch Public Safety personnel and contact other agencies as needed. Monitor alarms and answer non-emergency calls for assistance. Make quick and accurate decisions that require prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls. Accurately log data.
Building Services: Secure and open buildings, classrooms, sports facilities and other structures at various times - keep up with a highly flexible campus schedule. Monitor, activate and deactivate as required 75 alarm systems throughout the campus as well as the satellite campus.
Residence Services: Frequent contact with residents at all hours day and night. Perform lockout services for resident students when needed. Respond to disturbances, emergencies, and suspicious circumstances in the residence halls. Support the Resident Assistants, Residence Directors and Brothers as partners in residence hall safety. Report Writing & Log Entry: Regular documentation of incidents. Organized, detailed and succinct communication of events in a neat and professional fashion.
Other Duties as Assigned: Ongoing participation in training and other special projects.

Experience and Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

REQUIRED: High School Graduate or GED

PREFERRED: Bachelor Degree or some College Courses. Graduation from a California Police Academy or 30 units of college coursework in Administration of Justice.

Experience:

3 years of work experience in a customer service oriented position. Military, police, fire department, security or law enforcement work preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

Intermediate proficiency in the use MS Office Suite, proprietary databases and email. Specifically, some knowledge of the following would be helpful: Advocate, Ad Astra, MS Word, Access. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Knowledge of crime and fire prevention techniques. Physically able to perform the duties of the job, which include but not limited to the following: walking, standing, sitting, running, lifting, bending, twisting, restraining individuals and handcuffing.

Bilingual preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

REQUIRED:

California Driver's Licence, Class "C" and must be insurable by the college, current Guard Card issued by the State of California BSIS, current CPR certificate.

Other Requirements:

Availability to work weekends, holidays, nights, outdoors in inclement weather, overtime as assigned. Must demonstrate sound judgment in the face of quick decision-making. Ability to work in a high-pressure, multi-tasking environment. Must be able to remain calm and maintain a professional demeanor while facing hostility and all forms. Pre-employment screening will include a full criminal background and driving history check.
