University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
Director

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools invite nominations and applications for the position of director.

Founded in 1896 by renowned educator John Dewey, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (Lab) are among the nation’s best, and home to the youngest members of the University of Chicago’s academic community. With an enrollment of approximately 2,100 students from Nursery-3 through grade 12, Lab’s educational approach is designed to ignite and nurture an enduring spirit of scholarship, curiosity, creativity and confidence. Among other values, Lab prioritizes the importance of learning experientially, exhibiting kindness, and honoring diversity in all its forms. In addition to the excellent instruction of Lab’s talented and accomplished teachers, students of every age benefit from access to the University of Chicago’s outstanding faculty, programs, and thriving community.

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools director is the academic and administrative leader of Lab. Reporting to the provost of the University of Chicago, the director is charged with planning and executing strategic initiatives in close consultation with Lab’s board, students, faculty, staff, and families. The next director will supervise all of Lab’s 403 faculty and staff members, with eight direct reports, as well as the Schools’ $80 million budget, and will bring significant leadership experience in complex, multi-stakeholder educational institutions. The director will be a thought leader and engage the community on how Lab can best position itself to continue delivering an exceptional education to its students. To be successful in this leadership role, the director will have an understanding of, and ability to capitalize on, the unique opportunities and resources available through partnerships with the University of Chicago and beyond. The director will lead with the highest level of integrity and bring a collaborative approach, with a deep commitment to diversity and input from Lab stakeholders. The next director will find an outstanding opportunity to build upon a rich tradition of progressive education and to lead a talented and engaged community.
