Job Description:


As a member of the Student Development Division and Campus Engagement Unit, the Director supervises all aspects of the Office of Career Services and Employer Relations, including the planning, implementation and administration of comprehensive career development programs for students and alumni. The Director Is responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining partnerships with major employers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and, specifically, in the MetroWest Region in order to facilitate internship and career opportunities for Framingham State University students and alumni. This is a forward facing position working directly with students, while creating a strong network of employers and community members to support the work.


Supervises the coordinator of internships, career counselors, an administrative assistant, and student staff and interns.


Reports to Assistant Dean for Campus Engagement



  • Leads the daily operations of the Office of Career Services and Employer Relations.
  • Supervises and provides training and evaluation of two full-time professional staff and multiple part-time career counselors and student interns.
  • In collaboration with staff, determines annual and ongoing priorities for office, working diligently to bring these priorities to fruition.
  • Establishes and implements departmental policies and manages department budget.
  • Writes and presents grant proposals to obtain funds to support ongoing programs and for the development of new projects.
  • Collaborates with the University Development Office to work with donors regarding career engagement events and sponsorship.
  • Identifies student needs for information and advising on career planning, employment, graduate school opportunities, and scholarships. In collaboration with staff, creates programs, services, and publications to meet those needs.
  • Coordinates assessment of departmental activities to promote a culture of continuous improvement.


  • Counsels students on an individual and group basis regarding career planning, graduate school, and employment issues.
  • Develops and delivers workshops and career-related programs.
  • Supports University and Division's strategic goals by developing complimentary programming and resources.
  • Works with academic departments to meet the career and internship needs of students in targeted majors.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Student Involvement in creating and enhancing the connection between out of the classroom skills and career readiness, in connection to the Student Development strategic plan and within the Campus Engagement work unit.
  • Creates and enhances virtual programming calendar to meet the needs of a remote learning environment

Community Outreach/Networking

  • Represents college in various professional organizations and addresses a wide range of constituencies as chief spokesperson for University's undergraduate career planning.
  • Addresses alumni groups, parents, faculty, student organizations, and other administrators on career-related issues.
  • Makes concerted effort to develop new partnerships with families and faculty.
  • Build relationships and create awareness among corporate and community organizations with regard to the benefits of hiring university students and graduates and of the services of career center to increase job postings, recruitment, and hiring activity.
  • Works with members of the University community and local employers to develop and maintain mentoring relationships with students and innovative programs to meet strategic goals.
  • Presents to alumni groups, parents, faculty, student organizations, administrators, and community organizations on a variety of career-related issues.
  • Serve on University-wide committees and community boards to represent department and division.
  • Collaborates, writes and presents grant proposals to obtain funds to support ongoing programs and for the development of new projects.
  • Collaborates with diversity, inclusion, and community engagement department and diversity council to develop and implement diversity initiatives and programs.
  • Works with partners in industry and commerce to develop knowledge of employment trends in the state.

Responsible for reporting to the Equal Opportunity Officer or Title IX Coordinator knowledge or receipt of reports of discrimination, discriminatory harassment, and retaliation from students or other members of the university community.

Accountable for ensuring that equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions in areas of responsibility.


Office setting. Requires work on some evenings and weekends. Possibility for some remote work during coronavirus pandemic.



  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education, business, or a related field
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in a higher education environment, with at least three years in a professional position
  • Knowledge of career counseling, related career assessments, and job trends
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Supervisory experience of full-time professional staff


  • Effective public relations and networking abilities
  • Experience working in higher education career development office
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office suite and social networking tools
  • Experience using Handshake and Focus-2

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible position in the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) bargaining unit with a title of Director, Career Services and Employer Relations. The salary range is $63,000-81,000.
