Job Description:

Basic Function and Responsibility:

The Equity Coordinator for Black Student Success is a professional within the Office of Access, Equity, and Diversity (OAED) and is responsible for developing and implementing critical initiatives designed to support the college's Black and Pan-African student population. The coordinator is also responsible for oversight to Oakton's BLACK Student Success program and supporting the functions of the OAED and the Center for Campus Inclusion and Diversity (CCID).

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day implementation of the Black Student Success program.
  • Provide educational opportunities for the college community with a focus on systemic racism, social injustice, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and oppression of Black people at Oakton and throughout the United States.
  • Create new initiatives, which identify and connect to current local, national, and global equity-related trends and issues, with particular attention being paid to anti-racism, anti-bias, and student organizational development.
  • Work closely with identified student clubs and organizations such as the Black Student Union to communicate with Black and Pan-African students regularly during the academic year about student success opportunities.
  • Empower, develop, and lead a small team of student equity advocates to plan, develop, and execute social justice programming and cultural celebrations.
  • Manage the financial resources of Black Student Success program with assistance from OAED staff.
  • Develop and promote Black Student Success program through internal and external marketing and media presence, including social media, online, and print resources.
  • Develop collaborative working relationships with Black faculty, staff, and administrators with the intention of serving as a network of resources for Oakton's Black student population.
  • Serve as an advocate to effectively monitor and assess the on-campus experiences of Black students.
  • Coordinate end of the year celebration activities for Black Student Success program.
  • Coordinate program assessment and continuous improvement initiatives with the intention of identifying and closing equity gaps for the Black student population at Oakton.
  • Coordinate organizational presence and participation at identified campus-wide enrollment events and programs (i.e. Student Orientation, Admitted, Black Teen Summit, Commencement, OSLCI departmental initiatives, etc.)
  • Submit an annual report to the AVP at the conclusion of the academic year.
  • Develop partnerships with existing campus initiatives serving traditionally underrepresented student populations (i.e. TRIO, Service Learning, Financial Aid, etc.)
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution (or expected completion by August 2020), or an equivalent combination of training and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is required.
  • Experience in diversity training/education initiatives.
  • Knowledge and experience with programming initiatives and support services related to diversity, inclusion and student development theory.
  • Knowledge of past and current social trends affecting marginalized/non-majority students.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both to and on behalf of Black and Pan-African students.
  • Graduate student in Counseling Psychology, Student Personnel, Higher Education or related field.
  • Experience with advising and counseling students and recognized student organizations.
  • Experience with leading or coordinating campus-wide student success initiatives.
  • Academic and/or student development advising.


Physical Demands:

Mobility to move from building to building on-Campus and to visit off-Campus entities. Work is performed in a general office environment and is sedentary in nature. Little or no exposure to adverse working conditions.


Additional Information:

Supervision Received:

Administrative supervision is received from the Director of Student Life & Campus Inclusion. Functional supervision is received from the Manager of Student Life & Campus Inclusion.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional supervision may be exercised over student employees.

HOURS: Monday - Friday 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

SALARY: $24.25
