Laredo College continuously accepts applications for part-time (adjunct) instructors to create a pool of candidates for each session/semester. Applications will be reviewed and positions will be filled based on department needs. Applications received for this pool will remain active for one year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To instruct students in courses assigned by the Department Chairperson, Dean of Arts and Sciences or Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs offices in which the instructor has expertise.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, evaluate, and revise programs, courses, syllabi and objectives to ensure instructional and programmatical responsiveness to the occupational and academic needs of our students and to ensure instructional quality through the achievement of competency-based objectives.
- Must keep abreast of the changes that occur in the discipline due to the rapid changes of technology by actively participating as member of the advisory committees both on and off campus; by attending conference; by returning to appropriate field of expertise either through course work or world-of-work experiences; and by reading scholarly journals.
- Ensure that course syllabi not remain static and must be revised to reflect accurately the expectations the faculty have for their students and any new competencies delineated in the programmatical evaluation process.
- Share responsibility for the smooth operation of the College by participating in college-wide and departmental committees and activities.
- Participate in activities such as orientation, convocation activities, in-service sessions, graduation meetings, and seminars designed for professional growth and development.
- Inform the students in writing about course requirements, grading requirements, testing assignments, absence policy for each course assigned to a faculty member to teach by the Department Chairperson with approval of the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs and/or Dean of Arts and Sciences.
- Actively participate in meetings called by the Provost/Vice-President Academic Affairs, Dean of Arts and Sciences or Department Chairperson for the purposes of disseminating information, providing input into the decision-making process and sharing expertise with colleagues.
- Compile, administer and grade assignments and/or examination in a timely manner so that this information will inform the students with their progress and allow for the development of a plan of constructive activities that will allow the student to succeed.
- Must make every effort to provide a safe environment for the students and be responsible for the security of assigned equipment, materials, and classrooms.
- Encourage the use of the support services available to the student.
- Participate as a faculty advisor during the registration process by providing accurate career counseling and guidance at times assigned by the Department Chairperson, Dean of Arts and Sciences or Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.
- Participate in library collection development for the discipline(s) through request for materials and the evaluation of the present holdings.
- Provide information and/or data to the requesting officer so that the proper reports may be completed and filed with the proper education agency, funding agency, or accrediting agency.
- Follow the procedures related to the Admissions/Registration Office such as grade reports and deadlines; attendance record report; withdrawal deadline; class changes; and time and room scheduling.
- Cooperate with the evaluation procedures of courses by students; act as mentor to other faculty members; and/or become a member of an evaluative team for a colleague.
- Follow the proper procedures for requisitioning textbooks, instructional supplies, expendable supplies, and travel requisitions and reports.
- Support the recruitment activities of the College by participating in career days, presenting topics to civic leaders, and presenting career guidelines to high school, junior high school, and grade school students.
- Review and revise the catalog following the proper procedures.
- Substitute for colleagues when necessary.
- Direct library research or outside assignments.
- Sponsor or help sponsor student clubs or organizations.
- Promote the College’s programs and curricula.
- Follow the academic calendar as approved by the LC Board of Trustees.
- Use current technology to enhance effectiveness, including but not limited to computers, overhead projectors, PowerPoint, DVD/VCR equipment, and the like.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chairperson, Dean of Arts and Sciences, Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

- Must have a Master’s Degree or higher with at least 18 graduate hours in Communication, with graduate hours in interpersonal communication, public speaking, business and professional speaking rather than mass communication.
- Graduate coursework hours must be aligned with course learning outcomes that instructor will be teaching.
- Experience in teaching speech at the college level preferred. Teaching experience in speech and/or public speaking preferred.

- Be cooperative and professional in dealing with college administrators, colleagues, and students.
- Ability to operate specialized equipment, audio-visual aids and to develop lecture strategies to enhance teaching effectiveness.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
