Support VCU’s Information Security program by performing intrusion detection and incident response duties. Function as part of the information security operations team and analyze security events and declare and triage security incidents. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders and senior security operations staff to properly identify, contain, and eradicate threats. Coordinate with and assist IT and business units to recover from security incidents. Develop and track metrics around security events and incidents, and provide reports to security management on security operations. Assist full time security operations staff in other operational needs, such as vulnerability management operations, IT risk management operations, and training efforts.

Required Qualifications

Strong ethical standards and ability to observe confidentiality and acceptable use when dealing with sensitive subject matters.

Basic to intermediate knowledge of one or more computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, or varying Linux/Unix distributions.

Basic knowledge of computer networking protocols.

Basic knowledge of cyberattack and defensive methodologies.

Basic knowledge of scripting and/or programming languages.

Basic knowledge of system architecture and common application delivery platforms.

Basic knowledge of data security and privacy best practices and regulations that may apply to the higher education environment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent analytical skills and problem solving skills.

Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks and deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Ability to work successfully in a diverse work environment, in teams and independently with technical and non-technical individuals.

Ability to quickly acquire new skills and knowledge.

Strong interest in the field of technology and cybersecurity and the will to learn.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

Technical experience working with two of the three following security domains is strongly preferred: systems development security, network security and computer operations security.

Technical experience working with the development and operations in system architecture, networking, and/or application development preferred.

Technical experience working with intrusion detection/prevention systems, security information event management systems, and general understanding of intrusion detection and incident response processes preferred.

Experience working with organizational information security teams in the past is preferred.

Security related certifications, such as Security+, CISA, SSCP, CISSP, OSCP / OSCE, GSEC or other GIAC are preferred.

Experience working in a university setting is preferred.
