Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The animal care technician is responsible for the following:
Conduct accurate observations and reporting of animal health and cage elements for multiple species housed within DAR vivaria (food, water, bedding). Provide basic animal husbandry (i.e., cage, water, food change), cage/animal census, and room/vivarium/cage wash and housekeeping activities. Participate in staff training and employee health and safety programs. Follow the VCU Code of conduct to offer a consistently high quality of customer service.
Minimum Hiring Standards
High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to follow both oral and written instructions required. Must have some experience working with animals, either in laboratory or clinic, or have been responsible for personal pets. Must be able to lift 50 lbs easily; be able to stand for long periods of time up to one hour. Employee must be able to interact with animals for long periods of time; must be able to handle animals safely; to coexist with animals; disinfect walls, floors, and cages; daily inspect rooms and determine when supplies are needed. Must be able to properly handle and apply chemicals safely during room cleaning processes; wear any protective clothing or materials as needed; be able to observe and respond to situations in an appropriate manner. Individual needs to be able to work well with others and to meet deadlines. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Preferred Hiring Standards
AALAS certification at ALAT level preferred
