Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Responsibilities as Associate Director of this AAALAC International accredited institution include oversight of clinical care and wellbeing of animals used in biomedical research at the University, providing assurance for compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards concerning research animals, directing a staff of 4 and managing DAR resources. Duties include the following: assist in the development and oversight of animal health monitoring programs; protocol review consultation; participate in training of animal care staff, faculty and investigative staff; provide veterinary review of IACUC applications; IACUC membership; oversee the surgical research unit; and liaison and coordination with facilities and security planning and development. The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU . Experience with transgenic mice and mouse models of cancer including highly immunocompromised animals is required.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Minimum requirements include DVM / VMD from an AVMA accredited program, Board Certification by ACLAM, and at least 3-5 years’ experience at a comparable facility. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU . The ideal candidate has the ability to communicate effectively, and ability to supervise technical and professional staff, and has strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Hiring Standards

The ideal candidate will also meet the following preferred qualifications: experience with transgenic mouse models including mouse models of cancer, zebrafish, and large/ USDA regulated species including swine, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.
