The assistant vice president, alumni relations is responsible for creating and implementing programs, activities and communications strategies that effectively develop, promote, and nurture relationships between Rice University and its alumni — relationships that lead to life-long involvement with and support of the university. In that context, the assistant vice president also coordinates the involvement of the volunteer board of the Association of Rice Alumni with the university by serving in the capacity of executive director of the Association of Rice Alumni. The assistant vice president is responsible for the successful planning and execution of several major university events, including Families Weekend, Homecoming, and the President’s Lecture Series as well as the successful execution of communications and marketing campaigns relating to alumni relations. The ideal candidate will be a leader of people and programs with significant and successful experience in alumni relations, advancement or an analogous organization.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement. Education Preferred

Master’s degree; Rice degree.

Experience Required 8 years Type of Experience

Experience in a supervisory capacity; demonstrated track record of effective leadership, project management and strategic thinking.

Substitution for Experience Requirement Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement. Experience Preferred

- Alumni affairs experience in a college or university setting
- Experience leading volunteers towards strategic goals
- Experience in manipulating database information and data analysis
- Experience working with program leadership in a capital or comprehensive campaign

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated ( DWI ) or Driving Under the Influence ( DUI ) within the past five years.

License/Certification Preferred Skills Required

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including effective and persuasive writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead and motivate others
- Ability to manage a large number of fundraising activities simultaneously
- Ability to engage and motivate groups of diverse individuals
- Excellent ability to understand customer needs and demonstrate good judgment and diplomacy
- Demonstrated fundraising and / or project experience
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to quickly understand and remember details about alumni/donors and projects to which they are assigned

Skills Preferred

- Knowledge of database software concepts
- Professional demeanor and collaborative style

Internal / External Contacts

Internal: The incumbent has extensive contact within the university at all levels, especially upper-level administration. Contact is in person, in writing, and by telephone.

External: The incumbent has extensive contact outside the university with alumni, donors, and friends of the university. Contact is in person, in writing, and by telephone.

Physical Demands

Must be able to travel alone and to move about the campus with ease.

Working Conditions

Attendance at many evening and weekend events will be required. Some out-of-town travel (10-15%) will be required.

Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to support campus during emergency situations, and, may be required to provide related essential services remotely or on site before, during or after a campus emergency.

Essential Functions

- Leads and oversees organizational priorities as assigned
- Maintains overall responsibility for department operations including the recruitment, management, development, performance and retention of staff
- Develops strategies and implements outreach programs that build the university’s reputation, visibility and advocacy of its alumni, students, and decision-leaders around the world
- Sets departmental budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals
- Communicates mission to staff, volunteers and alumni
- Provides leadership and support on issues/projects related to university alumni initiatives
- Works with senior level University volunteers and board members
- Defines benchmarks, metrics, and other tools to evaluate programs university-wide
- Researches alumni program trends for service and revenue potential and makes recommendations for department head
- Collaborates with campus partners
- Performs all other duties as assigned
