Air University's Air War College invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Professor of International Security Studies. Candidates specializing in national security studies, with an emphasis on space, new domains, and technology are desired. The primary purpose is to teach and develop curriculum on U.S. national and international security for the West Space Seminar.

Responsibilities

The Air War College provides a dynamic and evolving academic environment for teaching and research. Students in the West Space Seminar are senior military officers and civil servants preparing to assuming strategic leadership responsibilities across the world, and particularly in the space domain. Primary instructor responsibilities include teaching and developing curriculum for the new West Space Seminar, including modified core courses offered by the Department of International Security Studies (National Security Decision-Making and Global Security). Responsibilities also include: teaching electives in the applicant's area(s) of specialization; grading student work; advising student research (approximately 2-5 papers/year); and service to the institution. Teaching duties approximate a 2/2 teaching load per academic year. Seminar size is approximately 15 students/class.

The Air War College contains a diverse faculty of security studies experts engaged in rigorous academic research on critical issues in contemporary security debates. It is a leading contributor of national security thought for leaders across the U.S. Government, and highly encourages policy-relevant scholarship by its faculty. Candidates will be expected to: Engage in professional research and writing in areas of expertise; actively seek publication of book manuscripts as well as scholarly works such as articles, monographs, and book reviews for publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, professional journals and other outlets; and present results of research at appropriate conferences and symposia. Service responsibilities include: Curriculum development for West Space Seminar; occasional committee assignment to fill department needs; and service as a subject matter expert to Air War College and Air University on subjects of Space as related to curriculum and teaching.

Qualifications

A Masters Degree is required, a Ph.D. preferred in Political Science, International Relations, History or a closely related field with an emphasis on international security policy.

Additional expertise on space, new domains, technology, and airpower will be given priority.

Applicants should possess and be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of educational requirements, instructional methods, and evaluation methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of a variety or research methods and ability to conduct and lead research.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team to design, develop, execute, and evaluate course material.
  • Ability to work effectively with graduate-level faculty and exercise peer leadership in working with senior and mid-level college leadership in the development of senior leader development programs.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and present the material to senior leadership.
  • Skill in written and oral communication to brief and/or lecture a wide variety of civilian and military audiences to include Air Force and DoD Agencies.
