General Summary/Purpose

Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Diversity Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the Inclusion, Diversity, Anti-Racism, & Equity (IDARE) Director of Student Recruitment & Engagement will actively work to enhance the recruitment, retention, and climate of historically underrepresented and underserved minority populations within the School of Public Health. The IDARE Director is responsible for developing, managing, and supporting initiatives directed at promoting a diverse and inclusive student community while acting as a resource to improve the overall IDARE climate at the SPH. As part of the IDARE team, the IDARE Director will work closely with offices, programs, and departments throughout the SPH including Admissions, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, SOURCE, etc. to integrate IDARE as a fundamental thread throughout the SPH.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Work closely with the Assistant Dean for DEI and school leadership to develop and implement strategies to promote a diverse student body and a positive learning environment for all JHSPH graduate students.

  • Act as a liaison and resource for Student Assembly and multicultural student organizations to support the success of URM and other historically underrepresented and underserved students.
  • Partner with the Office of Admissions to outreach to and recruit students from underrepresented and underserved minority backgrounds to the SPH, including hosting informational panels, travel to diversity focused recruitment opportunities, collaborate on the URM PhD student second look visit, etc.
  • Work with Assistant Dean for DEI to support existing and develop/manage new pipeline programs for URM students including a focus on partnering with local institutions (i.e. Morgan, Bowie, UMES, Coppin, UMBC, Howard, etc.).
  • Establish and manage a schoolwide network of diversity advocates for student admissions.
  • Create and manage a support network for URM and other historically underrepresented and underserved masters students.
  • Curate and elevate the IDARE presence around the school through supporting speakers, panels, art displays, and community partnerships.
  • Create support programs for our international students.
  • Co-sponsor educational and developmental experiences that foster student, staff, and faculty education in cultural competency, social justice, anti-racism, health equity, implicit bias, microaggressions, structural oppression, and bystander intervention.
  • Assist with tracking and reporting data on IDARE efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services within the position’s programmatic portfolio.
  • Other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and five (5) years related experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion focused work in higher education

Or

  • Master’s degreein higher education, public health, social work, or another relevant fieldand three (3) years of related experience required.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the* JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse students, faculty, and staff in a higher education environment
  • Experience creating, facilitating, and assessing IDARE trainings, workshops, and programs
  • Experience with managing mentorship programs
    Experience working with international students and scholars.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
