Position Summary:

The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve (LSNERR) Director provides overall program leadership and administration of the Reserve, including: Reserve operations, budget, and facility oversight; personnel administration and supervision; risk management; policy development and oversight; partnership relationships and formal agreements; public and donor relations; and strategic direction for Reserve policy, research, stewardship, monitoring, and educational programming.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Masters degree in a field that relates to the responsibilities of this position required, PhD preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
1. 6 years of relevant work experience.
2. Significant experience and demonstrated success supervising staff,
3. Experience building and leading effective partnerships made up of multi-agency and diverse organizations,
4. Strong evidence of organizational and leadership skills,
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods and technology,
6. Demonstrated success in leading collaborative natural resource-related programs, including leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluation,
7. Evidence of the ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.

Preferred:
1. Success in team building and conflict management, utilizing strong interpersonal communication skills,
2. Demonstrated ability to plan collaboratively and execute independently,
3. Demonstrated ability to initiate, form and effectively maintain working relationships with persons or associations from cultures other than ones own, especially indigenous cultures,
4. Understanding and knowledge of freshwater estuary systems, especially on Lake Superior,
5. Knowledge of complex political and organizational environments in which Extension works, particularly at state and local levels, and successful experience in these environments.

Additional Information:

WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. The home office location for this position resides at the LSNERR office at 14 Marina Dr., Superior, Wisconsin 54880.
2. The Director is expected to make arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions, and will hold a valid drivers license and complete a Vehicle Use Agreement to access University fleet vehicles for work-related travel needs.
3. Assume weekly local travel and occasional travel within the state and to regional and national events relating to the job responsibilities, with some overnight travel expected. Occasional travel to Madison, WI, is expected to meet with Institute and UW-Madison leadership as needed.
