Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean for Administration and Resource Management serves as the chief financial and human resources officer for the College of Arts and Sciences and is a member of the CAS leadership team responsible for assuming a leadership role for strategic, capital, non-capital, and financial planning for the CAS . The Assistant Dean is responsible for planning and oversight of the College resources and for ensuring that planning is based on an analytics approach – working with College administrators to analyze relevant data and develop short and long range financial and staffing models for strategic planning and decision-making. The Assistant Dean also collaborates with College administrators in short-term and long-term space and facility planning. In addition, this position supervises two full-time business services professionals and provides indirect supervision/coordination for the administrative support staff throughout the College. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
•Master’s degree in Business or Public Administration, Finance, Data Management, or a related field with at least three years of managerial experience in higher education OR a Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, Finance, Data Management, or a related field with at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in Higher Education or public sector in financial administration and planning.
•Ability to lead and supervise the College’s business services staff through two-way communication and a team-based approach.
•Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate technical material to a variety of audiences orally and in writing.
•Understanding of university resource needs.
•Understanding of university funding models.
•Ability to understand and utilize modeling and analytic techniques to develop financial and enrollment projections.
•Experience with financial and data-management software and the ability to quickly learn new systems as they are implemented by the campus.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
• Fundamental knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure of a university.
• Familiarity with budget processes and policies in the University of North Carolina System.
• Familiarity with Banner Finance and Banner HR reporting systems.
• Demonstrated experience of effectively working in a matrix organization.
• Five years’ experience with EHRA and SHRA position management.
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The College of Arts and Sciences is UNCW’s largest academic unit, employing 450 full-time and 150 part-time faculty members and awarding approximately three quarters of the university’s academic credits. Ours is a comprehensive arts & sciences college comprising the arts, the humanities, the mathematical and natural sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences.
The College’s twenty-five units offer a variety of undergraduate majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of Science. The College also offers a full complement of minors, including interdisciplinary minors such as Africana studies, Asian studies, Forensic studies, Latin America studies, Middle East & Islamic studies, Native-American studies, and Women’s and Gender studies, among others.
Applied learning is a hallmark of the student experience in the College of Arts and Sciences. Each of the College’s departments requires an applied learning experience as a part of the curriculum for its undergraduate majors. Examples include faculty-directed research, internships, service learning, and capstone courses and projects, all of which challenge students to integrate various stands of knowledge and to apply that knowledge to broader, real-world or real disciplinary situations. Through applied learning, students in the College gain direct hands-on experience with the skills of their major fields as an essential part of their preparation for life and career.
