The School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington welcomes applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Painting and Drawing Program in the Division of Art. The appointment starts in September 2021 and has a 100% full-time, nine-month service period.

Given the multidisciplinary nature of ideas and approaches in contemporary art, the School of Art + Art History + Design is developing its curriculum to encourage students to expand their interests across disciplines and fields within the university and surrounding community. These changes are ongoing and involve both historical knowledge and perceptual acuity, as well as an awareness of social, political, cultural, scientific, and conceptual investigations within the practice of art. The School of Art + Art History + Design is committed to building a faculty that reflects its diverse student population. Faculty in the Painting and Drawing Program are invested in painting and drawing as a form of critical inquiry, integrating research, and interdisciplinary approaches to making work and pedagogy. The Painting and Drawing Program faculty, work with undergraduate and graduate art students, as well as students from other disciplines in the School and across the university. The Painting and Drawing undergraduate curriculum offers formal knowledge at the introductory levels. Students at the intermediate and senior levels are encouraged to embrace a broader conceptual framework in their studio practice, emphasizing individual research, cultural diversity, critical thinking, experimentation, and a comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues in the arts.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an MFA in Painting and Drawing or a master’s degree—or foreign equivalent—in a related field by the start of the appointment, as well as a professional and academic record. Candidates must be able to teach at all levels in the undergraduate and graduate painting and drawing program and be proficient in the formal, perceptual, theoretical, and historical foundations of contemporary visual art practice.
