Reporting to the Dean of Student Development, the Assistant Dean is a key member of the Student Development team. This position is charged with managing the operations of the Office of International Advisement (OIA), including visa/immigration advisement and services related to support for students, faculty, scholars, staff and guest artists; developing and maintaining institutional policies that are fully-compliant with regulatory requirements; and working with regulatory entities, including but not limited to: SEVIS (the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System); U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS); the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS); Customs and Border Protection (CBP); Department of State (DOS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

 

The Assistant Dean provides comprehensive educational opportunities that foster cross-cultural competencies, including the development and implementation of educationally-based diversity and inclusion programs and professional development initiatives for students. The Assistant Dean, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of International Advisement and Graduate Assistant for Student Diversity Initiatives oversees the Diversity Advocates student leadership program. The Assistant Dean also oversees staple programs such as the Diversity Dialogues, Diversity Symposium, and Safe Zone trainings.

 The Assistant Dean serves in an on-call/emergency response rotation (approx. one week per month) for student emergencies and participates in committees as appropriate. 

 Responsibilities:

Leadership, Supervision, and Collaboration:

  • Serves as Juilliard’s appointed Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO) in overseeing the student and scholar programs in SEVIS.
  • Serves as The Juilliard School’s liaison to the USCIS, DHS, ICE, CBP, and DOS.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge on the latest immigration laws and federal regulations, and current world and economic affairs. 
  • Provides vision, strategic management, and expert policy interpretation/analysis to the international population at The Juilliard School.
  • Supervises Assistant Director of International Advisement and the Graduate Assistant for Student Diversity Initiatives and provides oversight of the student Diversity Advocates.
  • Oversees the training and support of Designated School Official (DSOs) and Alternative Responsible Officer (AROs) on campus.  
  • Works collaboratively with multiple departments on campus, including but not limited to: the Enrollment Management and Student Development teams, Human Resources, Accounts Payable, Registrar’s Office, Office of Financial Aid, Admissions, Career Services, and the Office of Academic Support and Disability Services.

 International Advisement:

  • Assist members of Juilliard international community with matters of special concern to them and serves as a referral source to other offices and academic departments.
  • Provides support and guidance to domestic staff, faculty, and students who are traveling abroad to participate in Juilliard-related activities. 
  • Provides support to undocumented students, as needed.
  • Develops and presents programs/services designed to enhance the academic and overall experience for international students, faculty, scholars, staff and guest artists in all Juilliard’s programs.
  • Anticipates necessary enhancements to meet the institution’s needs.
  • Serves on the English Affairs committee.

 International Student Orientation

  • Works in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs to develop and manage all components of the International Student Orientation program, including International Essentials, Julliard Online New Student Orientation (JONSO) and Juilliard Online New Family Orientation (JONFO) in Canvas, and the face-to-face programs.
  • Works with the offices of Student Affairs and Residence Life to provide support/assistance to all new students/families during New Student Orientation.

 Student Diversity Initiatives

  • Develops and oversees programming to raise awareness and understanding on diverse identities, beliefs, and practices for students.
  • Serves as a resource and advocate on equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging issues to the campus community and specifically to members of traditionally marginalized communities.
  • Maintains accurate assessment records of diversity initiatives and incorporates subsequent feedback to make improvements.

On-Call, Crisis Response, and Conduct:

  • Collaborates with Student Affairs, Academic and Disability Services, Health and Counseling Services, Residence Life, Security, and others, including legal affairs, Lincoln Center Security, NYPD, etc. with student-related medical, psychological, and other emergencies. (On-campus residency is not required. 24-hr phone and/or physical accessibility is required 365 days/year with exception to planned personal, vacation, professional development leave, or unexpected medical leave.)
  • Serves on the Juilliard Assessment and Care Team (ACT), Student Emergency Response Team (SERT), and assists with follow-up for students of concern.
  • Serves as a Student Conduct Administrator.

Administrative and Other:

  • Manages the OIA and Student Diversity budget along with visa-related account lines in other organizational budgets and ensures efficient and economical use of funds, materials, and other resources. 
  • Works collaboratively with the Finance and Legal offices to develop short- and long-term resource allocation needed for external contingencies (i.e. out-sourced law firms, renewal fees, etc.).
  • Member of the Scholastic Standing Committee.
  • Prepares and files statistical, annual, and other reports as needed.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident, as required by federal regulations to serve as Principal Designated School Officer (PDSO for F-1) and Responsible Officer (RO for J-1).
  • Master’s degree in International Education, Higher Education, or related field.
  • Five years of leadership experience in a higher education setting; demonstrated commitment to high quality service in an international student and/or scholar services role of considerable responsibility. Direct experience processing F-1 visas is required.
  • Strong operational knowledge of SEVIS and USCIS policies and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of current world and economic affairs.
  • Excellent analytical, oral, written, organizational, and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Maintains understanding and shows proficiency in utilizing technology, including but not limited to Office365, SharePoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other online systems including Colleague, Canvas, Drupal, and other cloud-based systems and Social Media.
  • Strong understanding of and sensitivity to international student issues and can demonstrate competence and ability to work successfully with a diverse population.
  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity and the mission of The Juilliard School.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • This position requires some evening and weekend work. It requires an individual who is interested in direct student contact.
  • Interest in and appreciation of the performing arts.

 Preferred Background:

  • Experience processing J, O, H and other non-immigrant visas.
  • Possess some background in ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching/advising skills.
  • Fluency in one or more languages other than English and out-of-country living experience is preferred.
  • Doctorate degree in higher education or multicultural/ethnic studies discipline highly desired.
