Job Description:

The Associate Dean and Director of Residence Life serves as a senior management team member for the Student Life division. The Associate Dean provides strategic planning and implementation of programs related to the Office of Residence Life and division wide assessment efforts. The Associate Dean will collaborate with offices throughout the University to ensure that services are effectively integrated with both institutional and divisional missions. The Associate Dean will provide vision, leadership and strategic direction to ensure the delivery of effective and quality service to a diverse student body.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Administers the University’s comprehensive student residence program.

  • Supervises and manages an office responsible for 3230 undergraduate and graduate students residing on campus.
  • Responsible for the accurate projection of annual campus residence occupancy rates, as well as multi-year rates based on enrollment and retention projections; oversees the housing lottery process
  • Oversees the distribution, collection, and review of housing benchmarking assessment data, including (but not limited to) damages, roommate changes, and proper maintenance of residence halls and student co-curricular development
  • Regularly reviews and recommends updates to Residence Life policies and procedures, for both department operations and facilities management
  • Oversees residential facilities to maintain a safe, secure, and healthy living environment; confirms that all room assignments and damage assessments are accurate and communicated to students in a timely manner
  • Develops and is responsible for the proper utilization of the budgetary funds allocated to Residence Life
  • Provide strategic vision and oversees residential communities, including all living and learning communities.
  • Develop residential curriculum in line with Student Life competency development that utilizes best practices in student development and research to create engaging and active learning environments
  • Interfaces with other University departments to ensure the proper and timely opening and closing of residence halls; facilitates the summer transition to the Conference and Events Office
  • Working with the Office of the Dean of Students, assists in the supervision of student behavior and oversees the student conduct process in the Residence Halls
  • Counsels students as appropriate, either directly or referring to other University agencies on campus, e.g. Counseling & Psychological Services, Campus Ministry, the Student Health Center, Department of Public Safety, Accessibility, Financial Aid, etc.
  • Serves as a member of the University’s Crisis Management Team and on call administration team


Manages and supervises the Residence Life professional and para-professional staff

  • Hires, trains and evaluates professional and para-professional staff.
  • Develops priorities and maintains the quality and timely schedule of departmental workflow
  • Communicates effectively with staff concerning pertinent departmental and University matters by conducting regular staff meetings
  • Maintains a climate conducive to the professional growth of all staff, including providing resources for professional development on and off campus (as funding allows)


Coordinate assessment initiatives for the Division of Student Life

  • Assist the Vice President of Student Life with coordinating all divisional assessment initiatives Work closely with VP of Student Life in coordinating the annual reporting and strategic planning process for the Division of Student Life. Providing leadership, coordination and expertise in designing, implementing, and interpreting assessment projects related to student development, learning outcomes, and educational programming/services student success and retention Providing expertise on the types of assessments that will be most effective, as well as guidance on designing instruments, sampling, data analysis, and reporting for offices within the Division of Student Life


To participate in the growth and development of the Division of Student Life. This involves:

  • Serving as a responsible committee representative as requested
  • Oversee the Professional Development group to ensure training and development of staff for the Division of Student Life.
  • Help with onboarding of new staff hires within the Division of Student Life
  • Representing the division at key signature University events such as Admitted Student Day, New Student Orientation and Alumni and Family Weekend


To promote safe and secure working conditions. This involves:

  • Promoting the proper utilization of equipment, tools, and staff
  • Notifying the supervisor immediately regarding any unsafe working conditions


EDUCATION: Master’s degree in student personnel, student affairs, counseling, higher education administration, or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Six years of progressive professional experience in Residence Life.
  • Supervision of residence life professional staff is required.
  • Experience in, and a strong understanding of, Residence Life practices in a small private school setting.
  • Knowledge of housing software, in particular Housing Director.
  • Comfortable presenting to groups.
  • Strong understanding of and ability to weave a formational approach into various types of student initiatives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external constituents.
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions and ability to engage in emergency and crisis situations.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to motivate students and staff.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evening, weekend and “on call” assignments.
  • Must understand the stated Catholic and Jesuit identity of the university an essential component of the mission.


RESIDENCY: On-campus apartment optional.
