The Bard College Theater & Performance Program invites applications for a Playwright in Residence teaching position, beginning in Fall 2021. This is a full-time, 10 month, academic-year position, on a 3-year renewable contract.

The successful candidate will play a key cross-disciplinary role in a complex and multi-faceted Theater & Performance program, embedded in a professional performing arts center, within the context of a liberal arts education. They will be expected to teach courses in playwriting (introductory, intermediate, and advanced), dramatic literature, and other specialized studio and seminar courses, depending on their particular expertise. Teaching in the first year is four courses. In ensuing years, it will be five courses. The position is eligible for one semester of sabbatical-equivalent leave every seven years. In addition to teaching, faculty are also expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity outside the College, and participate in service duties for the Theater & Performance Program and the college at large including the academic advising of undergraduates, participation on college-wide committees, working collaboratively on program needs, and occasional teaching in the First Year Seminar. Full time faculty are required to spend at least four days per week on campus.

The successful candidate will have a national reputation as a produced and/or published playwright and have a strong background teaching at the undergraduate university level in at least one other discipline within the fields of theater and performance (such as acting, directing, dramatic literature, performance studies, or design and technical theater). Preference will be given to applicants with interdisciplinary interests and experience, and expertise in fields that broaden the reach of the Theater & Performance Program, such as post-colonial studies, African diaspora and African American theater, Asian and Asian American theater, Latinx Theater, or global indigenous theater and performance. In addition to having a strong record of professional/creative activity and/or scholarly research, teaching, collaboration with other artists/scholars, and institutional service, the successful candidate must be committed to the academic success of our students and to fostering an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and difference.

QUALIFICATIONS: MFA or PHD in Theater or Performance Studies, or equivalent professional experience; evidence of successful teaching at the college or university level; and experience in working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

To apply, please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, sample course syllabus, contact information for 3 references, and a 20-page sample of a produced and published play via http://apply.interfolio.com/78635. Review of applications will begin November 15, and finalists' references will be contacted for letters of recommendation. Bard College is an equal opportunity employer and is especially interested in candidates who intend to contribute to the diversity goals of the institution.
