The Collections Lead Librarian evaluates, strengthens, and promotes the collections of the Syracuse University Libraries in alignment with the research, teaching, and learning needs of the University. Working with liaison librarians, the librarian provides broad-based budgetary management, reviews, negotiates for, and procures significant resources that support research and learning. This includes developing and leading initiatives to gather data and feedback and building a broad under-
standing of faculty and student needs at Syracuse University. By promoting an environment of evidence-based collection
acquisition, management and review based on data analysis and knowledge of scholarly communications trends, the librarian
boosts the University’s ability to project its presence and values in the rapidly evolving academic publishing ecosystem and
contributes to the development of sustainable and efficient collections infrastructure. As the team lead for the collections team, the librarian supervises 3-5 collections team members who collectively develop the University’s collections and works closely with the Head of Collections and Research Services and three other Lead Librarians to coordinate activities of DRS .

Qualifications

• MLS ( ALA -accredited) or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

• At least three (3) years of professional experience as a librarian is required.

• At least one (1) year of collection development experience including vendor negotiation, budget oversight, and collection analysis is required.

• Team and/or committee leadership experience is required.

• Supervisory experience is preferred.

• Experience with electronic resource management tools is preferred.

• Data visualization experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Collection Development:
• Maintain awareness of developments, issues, and practices in scholarly publishing, collection development, research, and scholarly communication.
• Lead vendor relations activities and actively participate in negotiations.
• Facilitate trials of e-resource products.
• Lead initiatives to gather information and ideas for collection development and build broad understanding of collection needs at Syracuse University.
• Provide recommendations to the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship and Head of Collections and Research Services for acquisition of high-priced resources.
• Play a substantive role in maintaining/developing the relevant infrastructure(s) and workflows required to support e-resource and physical media (including print) selection/procurement/ management/review in an efficient manner.
• Monitor expenditures and manage budget allocations in alignment with University priorities and policies.
• Maintain and update principal collections procedures.
• Manage approval plan including leading profile reviews.
• Manage investments in interinstitutional initiatives to further refine and enhance sustainable open access strategies.

Collection Analysis:
• Review and analyze collections using quantitative and qualitative assessment tools to improve their relevance to the campus community.

Communication and Outreach:
• Develop strategies for promoting library resources in conjunction with Director of Communications and External Relations.
• Promote connections between collections, those in the Special Collections Research Center, and those produced via Open Publishing initiatives.
• Contribute to donor relations, fund-raising and grant writing efforts in the Libraries.

Supervision:
• Supervise librarians on Collections Team.
• Complete performance reviews in conjunction with department head.
• Contribute to department goal setting.
• Mentor reports in relation to professional development and Libraries promotion process.

Professional Development and Service:
• Participate in interdisciplinary library teams as assigned and work collaboratively and creatively to implement and enhance programmatic services that benefit the University.
• Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the university, and the library profession.
• Maintain awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that increase one’s knowledge and abilities, and that positively impact one’s performance and service contributions.
