This role is part of the newly created Marketing and Communications team within the Enrollment division and will report to the director of enrollment marketing and communications. The team goals are to consistently communicate the brand and identity of Rice University and its six undergraduate schools to prospective students, parents and school educators and to accurately and persuasively represent and market the university and its undergraduate academic programs to prospective students and others. The team works to ensure that the enrollment division uses the most contemporary and effective approaches to reach prospective students and coordinates innovative communications initiatives through a variety of media including print, web, email, and social.

The web developer and designer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the Enrollment division’s virtual presence. S/he will lead the development and design of both the financial aid and undergraduate admissions website. S/he stays up-to-date on current user experience (UX) best practices and works across teams to implement design and layout in an integrated manner within the Rice Enrollment brand standards. This position uses analytics tools to lead in data-driven decisions to design, build, and maintain high quality, high-performance sites for Enrollment ensuring quality and consistent look and feel across the department and multiple devices and browsers.

The ideal candidate can demonstrate the ability to design web marketing material and content, understands web content development and cloud services, and has expert level knowledge of front-end development languages and ability to hand-code HTML, CSS and JavaScript as well as create/edit Drupal 8 themes using Twig. S/he can interact positively with and build consensus among a diverse group of colleagues, clients, and senior leadership.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement. Education Preferred Experience Required 6 months Type of Experience

Related web development experience working on a team (experience gained as a student or during an internship is acceptable).

Substitution for Experience Requirement May substitute additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the experience requirement. Experience Preferred

Two years of web development experience.

License/Certification Required License/Certification Preferred Skills Required

- Good customer service skills and ability to explain technical features to non-technical customers/clients
- Familiarity with a range of programming and scripting languages
- Good understanding of web standards and usability methods
- In-depth knowledge of content management systems
- Demonstrated proficiency building applications in a web development framework
- In-depth knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related website development technologies and software
- Understanding of systems integration and various web devices and environments
- Ability to design and implement web services
- Familiarity with authentication and access control
- Knowledge of website delivery best practices

Essential Functions

- Implements and maintains content management systems
- Supports the development and maintenance of web sites
- Monitors and reports on website traffic and performance
- Performs periodic website audits
- Performs maintenance duties
- Updates web pages to ensure site accuracy and currency; performs light web design
- Interfaces with existing database, using existing data and discovery tools user interfaces, and tools for specific discovery and delivery environments, such as library online catalogs, to access data stored on web services
- Produces online content, animated gifs, static buttons, and email and landing pages under the direction of senior web developer and content manager
- Performs development and maintenance programming for web pages and small web applications
- Builds small applications
- Evaluates and supports user needs, and recommends solutions within existing platforms; maintains and develops documentation and how-to guides for customers
- Performs website administration duties for existing clients
- Ensures web server and site technical performance
- Performs light troubleshooting and first line support
- Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions or Information

- Collaborates with staff from multiple functional areas to design and build vibrant websites that support the mission and vision of the Enrollment Division
- Works independently and in collaboration with the communications team to implement websites’ layout and design that adhere to usability and accessibility standards
- Continuously assess usability and accessibility of website designs on multiple browsers and platforms
- Implements user interfaces to maximize website usability under University guidelines and policies
