Position Description:

PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Network Services, and daily work direction of the Lead Network Operations Analyst, the Network Operations Specialist participates in the operation, installation, support and maintenance of any or all of the following systems:
  • The campus servers and data storage technologies, which deliver production Data Services to the Campus.
  • Monitoring, reporting, logging and security systems used by Network Operations to operate the data centers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. System Administration and Support:
  • Install, configure and maintain CSUMB's enterprise datacenter systems, primarily servers and their operating systems, including all versions of Windows through Server 2016, and the various distributions of Linux such as Red Hat and CentOS.
  • Maintain and operate Network Operation Center equipment and systems as assigned by the Lead Network Operations Analyst, such as backups, patch and vulnerability management, SIEM and event log analysis, network device monitoring and other tools.
  • Completes assigned service requests for Network Operation Center resources, including installation/de-installation of operating system software, upgrades, adding peripherals and providing system and network configurations
  • Work with vendors and/or IT@CSUMB analysts and technicians for follow-up as appropriate.

2. Customer Service Functions:
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, students, staff, and vendors, as needed, regarding Network Operation Center issues.
  • Prepares documentation, FAQs, and other end-user materials for the IT@CSUMB Help Desk and the campus community, as appropriate. Communicates effectively with faculty, students, staff, and vendors, as needed, regarding Network Operation Center issues.
  • Provide timely resolution and maintain consistent feedback to clients regarding the progress of service requests.

3. Backup and Disaster Recovery
  • Maintain and develop the campus Backup and recovery systems.
  • Ensure all campus servers are backed up on a regular schedule, based on campus requirements.
  • Test and verify backup and restore processes for DR plans to ensure they are viable.

4. Virtual Infrastructure
  • Patch and maintain the campus' virtual environment
  • Ensure consistent up-time and availability.

Other Functions:

Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: system management and security/control procedures; database design, structure development, features, operations, programming, and data access principles; data communication network architecture, configuration, protocols, and interfaces; operating systems and storage capacity, including ability to perform capacity planning.

Ability to: identify and implement critical maintenance fixes and to isolate and correct malfunctions, including operating system and application problems; develop and execute disaster recovery plans; establish data security standards and procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:
To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in operating systems programs, maintenance, and systems administration features is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Operating Systems Analyst include a working knowledge of the assigned computer operating systems, systems analysis, and systems-level programming.


Specialized Skills:
Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Networking, Information Systems, Educational Technology, Communications, or related field AND two (2) years experience in Enterprise Information Technology are required. Knowledge and skills administering server operating systems, virtual environments and datacenter management tools along with a firm understanding of networking, cloud based software and today’s SaaS technologies.

Ability to install, patch, update, maintain and troubleshoot Windows and Linux Operating Systems. Ability to code and document scripted solutions (Perl, bash). Experience with Windows Active Directory and Enterprise Identity Management and configuration principles and concepts are required. Working knowledge of virtual computing environments. Understanding of Backup software and ROI.

Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of physical and virtual Servers
  • Storage systems architecture, configuration, and methods.
  • Basic office productivity tools such as Microsoft Office, web browsers, calendaring, and e-mail clients.
  • Using organized change control procedures in a production Network Operation Center environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Enterprise Backup Systems for Data Centers.
  • Experience with VMWare and/or AHV hypervisors
  • Enterprise Antivirus, OS Patching and Vulnerability Management systems.
  • Familiarity with cloud services, concepts and technologies desired.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision.

  • Occasional evenings and/or weekend work may be required.



PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Works primarily in a climate controlled environment with some safety/health hazard potential. Work may involve risk of being exposed to electrical shock. Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. This position also requires sitting, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, walking, talking and using manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and ability to lift 20-30 lbs. Required to travel between campus offices and, possibly, off-campus.
