Assistant Professor of Native American and Indigenous
Studies
Notre Dame Department of American Studies
The Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame
seeks an innovative and dynamic early-career scholar of Native
American and Indigenous Studies to hire at the rank of assistant
professor with a start date of July 1, 2021. This position is open
in terms of research focus, but a PhD in American Studies, Native
American Studies, or related interdisciplinary field is strongly
preferred. Candidates with a PhD in another field will be
considered if they demonstrate extensive interdisciplinary training
in a field closely related to North American Indigenous studies at
the PhD level. An ideal candidate might also have a demonstrated
track record of socially-engaged research, experience teaching and
mentoring Native and other underrepresented students, and/or a
record of collaboration with Native communities. Although we
recognize the importance of studying indigeneity in other global
contexts, we are only considering scholars who focus primarily on
Native North America for this position.
The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic institution located on
the traditional homelands of Native peoples including the Pokégnek
Bodéwadmik / Pokagon Potawatomi, Haudenosauneega, Miami, and
Peoria, who have been using this land for education for thousands
of years, and continue to do so. The Department of American Studies
at Notre Dame consists of fourteen interdisciplinary faculty
members and nearly one hundred highly-engaged undergraduate majors.
As our departmental motto puts it, we challenge students to “study
America in all its diversity.”
The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain
the highest quality faculty, staff and administration. The
University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to
building a culturally diverse workplace. We strongly encourage
applications from female and minority candidates and those
candidates attracted to a university with a Catholic identity.
Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or
disabled qualified individuals, and requires affirmative action by
covered contractors to employ and advance veterans and qualified
individuals with disabilities in compliance with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a)
and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a).
Applicants should send a cover letter and CV via Interfolio no
later than October 15, 2020. The search committee will request
letters of recommendations and writing samples from selected
applicants in November. Please direct any questions to
