Purpose of Position

To provide customer service to the university housing community by ensuring a clean, sanitary, and inviting environment. Responsible for making decisions, planning and assigning work, and ensuring compliance with department and University policies. To supervise and oversee all custodial operations for Housing. Responsible for training of all new employees as a primary responsibility. This is a hands-on working position requiring a minimum of seventy five percent (75%) of the shift monitoring or assisting employees with their responsibilities, including the performance of custodial duties for absent employees.

Primary Responsibilities

Supervise custodial staff, provide customer service by responding to service calls for Housing, training all new custodial staff, prioritizing duties on a daily basis, assigning work orders to ensure all dorm rooms are clean, sanitary and inviting to students.
Ensure that subordinates have the proper equipment, supplies and materials required to complete daily work assignments. Monitor the quality and quantity of employee performance on a daily basis.
Promote safety awareness. Monitor and ensure that safety gear is worn and ensure proper procedures and precautions are followed to allow for the safety of personnel, equipment and University property. Reports observed safety concerns or other problems needing attention to Supervisors.
Informs superintendent or supervisor of current and potential concerns related to employee work performance and personnel matters. Provides superintendent or supervisor with detailed documentation concerning work accomplished, employee attendance, items of special interest, product and equipment efficiency.
Implements and assures compliance with policies and procedures established by the University and department. Effectively and courteously communicates with NKU students, staff and faculty.
Participates in pre-employment interviews and hiring process. Oversees the training of new employees. Assists in administering end of probation, annual and other performance evaluation processes.

Responsible for assigning room assignments that need Custodial attention. Responsible for checking rooms on a daily basis to make sure work has been completed.

Participates in the annual key inventory verification.

Other duties as assigned.


High School/ GED graduate required. Extensive knowledge & experience of cleaning preferred.
Must possess at least 2 years of related experience & 1 year of supervisory experience;
Must possess a valid driver’s license; Must possess above average computer skills, experience with SchoolDude or CMMS or Timekeeping system preferred.
Must be able to perform medium heavy to maximum physical exertion with ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. or more; Requires ability to work any/all hours necessary including weekends and outside normal working schedule to meet the needs of the university and Operations & Maintenance Department.
