Manager, Social Media
The Office of University Communications shares the stories of Wesleyan University—highlighting the achievements of our university and its students, faculty, and alumni, in pictures and in words. Located in historic South College with several satellite locations across the campus, the office develops and executes university-wide and specific strategic marketing and communications efforts, including social media, email, web, video, media relations, print publications, and design services.
Reporting to the Director of Content Strategy and Creation, the Manger, Social Media will collaborate closely with a talented team of writers, videographers, developers, and designers to help lead the development of comprehensive digital marketing campaigns and curate/grow the University’s digital audience segments. They will be primarily responsible for utilizing social media channels to advance the communication and marketing objectives of Wesleyan, and for collaboratively developing measurable, digitally native audience experiences.
This position is responsible for all aspects of Wesleyan’s central social media programs including strategy development, tactical execution, and reporting/analytics.
The Manager, Social Media will work collaboratively as an ambassador and evangelist with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and other campus groups to support their marketing needs and promote best practices in social media and digital marketing.
Own and drive the main Wesleyan social media properties and content calendar
Develop/refine and execute the overall strategy, tactics, project management, analysis, policies, documentation, and reporting of Wesleyan’s social media initiatives
Create and collaborate, with others on targeted, native social media content that enhances the University’s reputation, grows audiences, and drives engagement.
Explore innovative approaches to engage audiences and stay abreast of new media channels to help lead the University in targeting audiences in inventive ways
Advise, consult and train campus partners social media best practices
In partnership with the Email and Digital Marketing Specialist, evaluate paid/promoted strategies for social media and advise on plans for advertising in social media
Investigate and advise on social media budgets for tools, staffing, training, etc.
Provide live coverage of major events (e.g. Commencement).
Recruit and manage a sizeable team of student interns to assist with event coverage and content sourcing and production
Occasional night, weekend and holiday duty depending on the demands of the academic year.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in English, marketing, digital communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field with 5 plus years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications, with at least 4 years of social media experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Demonstrated passion for social media and innovative marketing solutions.
Demonstrated experience in content marketing tactics and strategy.
Proficiency with social media listening tools, and a refined sense of voice, tone, and diplomacy.
Proficiency with managing and developing strategies for multiple social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
Excellent writing skills, with particular focus and experience in writing for social media using appropriate conventions and voice.
Proven record of accomplishment in managing complexity and delivering results in a complex organization.
Proficiency with MS Office suite of tools (e.g. PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Good judgment in identifying issues and recommending solutions to others.
Ability to lead and work collaboratively across organizational lines
Experience collaborating with internal constituencies and working collaboratively in the development of communications and marketing strategies.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.
A proven record of accomplishment of developing a sophisticated, strategic approach to social media where such a foundation did not previously exist.
A mix of marketing communications experience in higher education as well as in the private sector.
Experience working with social media management systems (for example Hootsuite, Falcon)
