The Department of Ethnic Studies at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for an open rank search (tenure-track or tenured) in the field of African American Studies, beginning fall 2021. We seek applicants with expertise in African American Studies to support the undergraduate Ethnic Studies major and minor as well as an anticipated minor in African American studies, while contributing to department scholarship in critical race and ethnic studies.   We welcome applicants from any discipline, but we are especially interested in scholars with a record of training and research centered on African Americans in the U.S. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies or a related field, a strong scholarly trajectory, and experience teaching on topics of race and ethnicity to a diverse population of undergraduates. Candidates must demonstrate strong scholarly potential, including a record of existing publications or research accomplishments, works in progress, plans for future research, connection to intellectual communities that will support a productive research plan, and potential for success as a teaching scholar. Candidates should also demonstrate strong teaching potential including experience teaching in the areas of African American Studies and/or Ethnic Studies to a diverse population of undergraduates, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research mentoring of undergraduates.   The successful candidate will have a course load of seven courses a year, with a course release each year for active scholarship and an additional course release in the first year. Courses will include a mix of lower division courses such as Ethnic Studies 5: Introduction to Study of Race and Ethnicity in the U.S., and Ethnic Studies 30: Introduction to African American Studies; as well as upper division courses in their area of expertise. The successful candidate will also provide support to the department’s major by advising students pursuing the major and minor, and by supporting students conducting research in fulfillment of the Ethnic Studies capstone. For this reason, the ideal candidate will have a record of strong teaching as well as mentoring and support of undergraduate students. Successful candidates for our faculty position will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to social justice through their research, teaching, and service and the ability to contribute to department, College, and University priorities. We seek balance between research, teaching, and service and are interested in candidates with a demonstrated commitment to each of these areas.   Santa Clara is a private, Jesuit, Catholic university located in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley. Faculty are teaching scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research and creative scholarship. Ideal candidates should therefore demonstrate not only potential for excellent undergraduate teaching, but also promise in sustained research and scholarly publication, as well as an understanding and support of the University’s mission and goals.   Santa Clara University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer, committed to excellence through diversity and inclusion, and, in this spirit, specifically invites applications from women, persons of color, and members of historically underrepresented groups. The University will provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with a disability.   Minimum Qualifications: 1. Evidence of excellent university-level teaching in Ethnic Studies or related field to a diverse population of undergraduate students.   Preferred qualifications: The ideal candidate will demonstrate: - evidence of strong research productivity, excellence in teaching, and mentoring of undergraduate students. - broad expertise in African American Studies and a proven track record of working with researchers from diverse disciplines and ability to effectively communicate their work to a broader public. - experience and interest in teaching and mentoring African American students - experience in supervising and collaborating with students in research projects centered in African American studies   Position Starting Date: September 1, 2021 Application Deadline: October 30, 2020   Application Procedure: Applicants should submit (1) cover letter outlining suitability for the job, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) graduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable at this stage), (3) three letters of recommendation, (4) sample syllabi, (5) teaching evaluations, (6) personal statement covering teaching philosophy, research plan, and experience working with diverse populations (no more than 2 pages), (7) at least one example of representative scholarship, e.g., published article or book chapter, or related publication.
