Associate Vice President (Administrator)

Founded in 1855, The Pennsylvania State University is Pennsylvania's only land grant university and has a broad mission of teaching, research, and public service. During fiscal year 2018-2019, the University's research expenditures exceeded $968 million, with approximately $100 million in research expenditures from industry.

To further engage and expand our industry partnerships, the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research (OSVPR) is seeking an Associate Vice President for Research and Director of Industry Research Collaborations. This position reports to the Senior Vice President for Research and will be responsible for developing and expanding corporate relationships with existing and potential industry partners to grow industry-related research at Penn State.

The position will focus on supporting the Research Enterprise in the following areas:
  • Advancing industry sponsored research opportunities: This involves creating mutually beneficial relationships between faculty and industry partners and developing avenues for industry to sponsor and sustain research and do so in collaboration with the deans, institute directors, and chancellors of the colleges and commonwealth campuses.
  • Partnering with Penn State's Corporate Engagement Center (CEC): The Corporate Engagement Center is a joint venture between the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research and the Division of Development and Alumni Relations working in partnership with Career Services. This position will partner with the CEC to present opportunities for strategic philanthropic investment to further company goals for research and for expanding their talent pool.
  • Expanding industry presence at Penn State's Innovation Park: Penn State's Innovation Park offers 118-acres of office, manufacturing, and research space with ready access to Penn State's scientific, engineering, technology, and business resources. It also supports transferring knowledge from the University to the marketplace. Resources at Innovation Park support early-stage entrepreneurs and established businesses. This position will develop and nurture corporate relationships with existing and potential partners to locate at Innovation Park, thereby furthering industrial research growth.
  • Supporting development, implementation, and execution of the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research's strategic plan: This plan is designed to ensure that Penn State remains one of the world's greatest research institutions. Strategic goals align with thematic priorities identified by the institutional strategic plan. This position will help maintain currency of the OSVPR's strategic plan and identify progress against it.
  • Supporting industry and community innovation activities: One of the OSVPR's strategic goals is Invigorating Entrepreneurship, Technology Transfer, and Economic Development. This position will collaborate with the Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization and the Office of Technology Management to ensure broad engagements with technology development, e.g., supporting our communities with Makerspaces or supporting companies through Penn TAP. Representing SVPR as needed. The Office of the Senior Vice President for Research has significant activity, and there are times where leadership from within the Office will be needed at multiple meetings, events, or other activities. This position will be expected to be sufficiently well versed in the Office's activities to be able to represent the Senior Vice President for Research when warranted.

    The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in: corporate research and how it relates to university research, establishing relationships with potential industry sponsors across the University, and creating relationships that attract industry partners to locate near Penn State campuses, including Penn State's Innovation Park.

    The successful candidate must be self-motivated, have exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and have the ability to manage multiple projects. The position requires a Master's degree (minimum, technically-oriented preferred) plus at least ten years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
