Programmer & Data Specialist

General Summary/Purpose

DataTrail is a “guided pro-social network” that joins data science learners and data science experts in a mutually intensive learning experience: the learners engage in guided technical and soft skills training needed to enter the data science field while the experts engage in guided anti-racism and other social justice training needed to be effective allies in the workplace. The social connections created along the way will fuel job opportunities for learners and foster a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive climate at the experts’ institutions.

DataTrail seeks a Programmer & Data Specialist who will devote primary effortto platform establishment, oversight, and maintenance, content development, tutoring, and communications.The position will be housed in the Department of Biostatistics’ Data Science Lab (DaSL) (https://jhudatascience.org/) which focuses on developing and distributing data science educational material—a top-rated job nationwide.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Systems Management and Reporting

  • Establish, oversee, and maintain the Slack social media platform which will support and facilitate the communication and development of all DataTrail enrollees
  • Develop educational content and data science-related training material for the DataTrail training program.
  • Conduct routine maintenance of current and new educational content
  • Develop software and technologies in R for automating educational content development.
  • Perform moderately complex data analyses using systems such as R and SQL to interpret program and/or research data, present findings and prepare data for use in various capacities including but not limited to program and software development, research and grant writing.
  • Manage all reported bugs on the Slack platform. The programmer will track, document, evaluate and remedy all issues
  • Collaborate with the DaSL to develop, implement and maintain new R packages.
  • Conduct routine maintenance of established R packages including, but not limited to Swirl.
  • Attend standing group meetings to report on project status and troubleshoot any areas of concern.

    Training and Education
  • Serve as the lead instructor for the DataTrail training program.
  • Maintain an online presence for weekly office hour sessions and answer course and platform-related questions, with support from an extended team of data analysts.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all inquiries and troubleshooting requested from scholars via Slack and/or during office hours.
  • Serve as the primary host for a weekly “Tech Talk” web segment run by community partner, HeartSmiles. The segment will focus on sharing information on the practical application of data science, how to break into the industry, and real-life experiences from other industry professionals.
  • Remain current on updated DataTrail course material.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain knowledge of current industry trends.

    The Programmer & Data Specialist will report to the DataTrail program administrator and is not responsible for the direct supervision of staff.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Successful completion of the Cloud-Based Data Science Plus program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 0 to 1 year of data science and R programming experience.

  • Experience in practicing data science across scientific and/or practical domains.
  • Excellent communication skills: written, verbal, interpersonal and teaching
  • Proven ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and adhere to deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and respond quickly, creatively, and flexibly
  • Strong programming skills and a willingness to build on them with new technology
  • Experience with the R (required) and Python (recommended) programming languages
  • Experience writing and sharing open-source code using version control (GitHub), cloud-based document sharing (web pages, Google Suite, Slack, DropBox), and project management tools
  • Ability to assist with writing grant applications and work with potential funders.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
