Position Summary:

The Biology of Aging research program focuses on genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms that make aging one of the greatest risk factors for nearly every chronic disease. The anti-diabetic drug metformin can delay the onset of several age-related diseases in animals. Retrospective data suggests metformin increases survival in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, it remains to be determined if metformin can increase indices of healthy longevity in non-diabetic adults. A research specialist is needed to activate and coordinate studies using metformin and/or other interventions (e.g., exercise, diet, etc.). These studies will include gold-standard techniques to evaluate insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, skeletal muscle mitochondrial remodeling and function, and biomarkers of aging. This position will work in the lab of Dr. Adam Konopka and assist with growing a new translational research program.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required. Background in medical field, physiology or related science field preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

- At least 3 years of previous experience with human subjects research required.
- 3 years of experience with phlebotomy and techniques to evaluate glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, such as continuous glucose monitoring, oral glucose tolerance testing, and/or insulin clamp techniques, required.

Relevant experience may include student, internship and post-degree training experience.

Additional Information:

Preferred qualifications include:
- 3 years of experience creating and implementing standard operating procedures
- Proficient at maintaining and operating YSI glucose analyzer
- Knowledge of DEXA scans to assess bone density and body composition
- Knowledge of stable isotope preparation
- Proficient in performing and analyzing 12-lead ECGs and spirometry
- Work with reporting adverse events
- Experience with REDCap design and management
- Experience performing and documenting quality control and equipment maintenance.
