The NIST Ion Storage Group (ISG) conducts experiments with trapped ions for applications in timekeeping, quantum metrology, quantum information processing, and quantum simulation. Within the NIST ISG, the Associate will work on improving the performance of key elements of trapped-ion-based quantum information processing, including both surface-electrode ion traps and Penning ion traps, laser- and microwave-based quantum gates, mixed atomic species techniques, hybrid quantum systems, quantum transduction, and improved quantum metrology.

Who We Are
The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
The particular group that needs a researcher is the Ion Storage Group under the Time and Frequency Division at NIST.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Carry out experiments, in collaboration with NIST staff, on trapped-ion quantum information processing.

What We Require
- Ph.D. in experimental physics or related field.
- Proven understanding of:
- Ultra-high vacuum techniques.
- Laser physics and optics.
- Sophisticated FPGA control systems.
What We Would Like You To Have
Research experience in atomic, molecular, or optical physics.
