Information Architect (Remote Opportunity)

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Information Architect (IA), university web strategy and solutions, plays a critical role in creating a cohesive and coordinated user experience (UX) across Northeastern websites, applications and enterprise systems. In addition to working with clients to organize and structure their content, the IA brings well-formed opinions in areas such as visual and information design as well as selecting the proper tools and exercises for the job. The IA leads various design thinking workshops along the lifespan of a web project such as user empathy and journey maps, card sorting, concept modeling, and whatever else necessary to bring order out of content chaos.

Responsibilities:

Content strategy
  • Establish a systematic process for creating successful IA for new web projects.
  • Project based, collaborative work with clients and the web solutions team to conduct user research and to define content structures, navigation systems, visual design direction, messaging, etc.
  • Audit and assess existing websites and applications for navigation and wayfinding optimizations and improvements.
  • Work with designers to craft visual designs that complement content strategies and messaging.
  • Analyze and optimize content for SEO.

  • Managing frameworks and systems
    • Enhance and optimize the university's design system through managing feature requests and bug fixes.
    • Manage content structures within the university's enterprise CMS.

    Support and Logistics
  • Create efficiencies in the team's overall workflow by automating repetitive tasks, clearly delegating assignments and appropriately and eliminating any identified work deemed unnecessary.
  • Manage a backlog of bug fixes and feature requests for various projects.
  • Provide prompt and helpful responses to service requests for new projects or support for something existing.

  • Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years experience with information architecture, content strategy, or a similar field.
  • Experience with Content Management Systems such as WordPress, Drupal and enterprise CMS solutions such as Contentful.
  • Proven experience translating complex, disorganized content into clear navigation and wayfinding structures.
  • Familiarity with Brown's 8 principles of IA.
  • Experience with Figma, Sketch or other collaborative design tools.
  • Experience working within an organization's brand and UI design system.
  • Experience leading workshops to create sitemaps, user personas, flows and visual designs.
  • Experience conducting A/B tests.
  • Ability to analyze a project's existing content and propose optimizations for a better UX.
  • Familiarity with SEO and direct and indirect marketing strategies.
  • Familiar with writing semantic HTML and CSS.
