Position: Endowed associate or full professorship with tenure in the T.T. and W.F. Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas. Salary commensurate with qualifications. Appointment begins July 1, 2018. Responsibilities: (1) Participate as an integral and active member of the Chao Center (see our website at http://chaocenter.rice.edu/) in teaching, research, journal publication, mentoring, and various collaborative activities; (2) provide intellectual leadership in the Center’s Transnational Asia Research Initiative (TARI); (3) play an instrumental role in the anticipated MA program; and (4) serve as the Chao Center Director at some point after the initial appointment.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in a social sciences or humanities discipline including, but not limited to, anthropology, Asian studies, cinema studies, history, philosophy, political science, religion, and sociology with a specialization in one or more areas of East Asia, South Asia, or Southeast Asia; and a demonstrated expertise in transnational circulations (e.g., the movement of peoples, products, ideas, values, beliefs, images, technologies, etc. within and/or beyond Asia). Proficiency in one or more vernacular Asian language(s) is expected. We seek a person with an excellent record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service that would justify a chaired associate/full professorship with tenure.
