POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Life and Physical Sciences Department currently has a full time opportunity for a Postdoc Research Associate for a 1-year term appointment. The candidate will participate in research related activities of the Materials Science and Applications Group (MSAG) at Fisk University, in collaboration with other universities and national labs, in a broad program of crystal growth and detector development. The group's primary activities involve the development of instrumentation for biomedical, national security and, space and planetary exploration. The successful candidate will be in charge of material preparation and characterization of properties that can be optimized toward improved device performance

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • The researcher will work within the materials science and applications group and have broad associations with other groups in the laboratory and throughout the world to carry out his/her function.
  • Domestic travel should be expected.

 

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

 

Performs other duties as assigned that support the educational and student mentoring activities for the purpose and initiatives of summer research program for undergraduates Fisk/Vanderbilt Master’s to PhD Bridge program.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

 

No direct reports although the successful candidate will be involved in the training of undergraduate and graduate students in the various research projects.

 

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Experiences with the synthesis, purification and crystal growth of scintillators and semiconductors for radiation detection is highly desirable as well as the knowledge of the operating principles of solid-state detectors for gamma-rays and neutron.

 

  QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education: PhD degree in physics or related disciplines from an accredited college or university required.

 

Experience: Minimum five years recent experience in crystal growth area.

 

Licenses or Certificates: None required.
